Screen Size vs. Viewing Distance vs. Resolution

I found a decent article on when 1080p matters. Click on the graphs to get a better image. What I was shocked at was that they stated that 1440p would be recommended for most seating distances for sets above 50" and projection. And that most folks would benefit from 1080p using standard viewing distances.

I liked the reference to things beyond 1080p - even 2160p - as I am not convinced that the monitor industry is going to stay parked at the 1080p peak that so many are freaking over.

I'd have to agree. I doubt (seriuosly) that we won't ever see anything greater than 1080p. Although that kinda ****es me off since I dropped a decent chunk down on a 50" Pioneer Elite 1080p within the past year.

      But oh well...

Well, the standards are there. The most you'll see in broadcast is 1080i as the 6 MHz channel bandwidth isn't enough to support a higher data rate. However, in cable or satellite, they could run as wide a bandwidth channel as they want for certain events, etc. And when it comes to something like high definition DVDs or even digital media, the only real thing limiting you is file size. 1080p is definitely the standard now but it definitely won't stay that way. It was nice with NTSC being the defacto standard for so many, many years. You knew that the set you bought this year would pretty much be just as good as a set purchased 10 years in the future except for bells and whistles. Not now. In 5 to 10 years, when large numbers of people had 50 Mb/sec fiber or higher who knows, Vudu might even support the higher resolutions. Maybe you'll need a 20 Mb/sec downlink but think of the awesome picture you'd have!
