    Goodbye Disc to Digital :(

If I recall, starting January 1st, Disc to Digital will no longer be offered (just mobile to digital). This, to my recollection, was sent in an email, but I haven?t heard much of it since. Is this still the case?

i am saddened to see this go as it was a major factor in my decision to pick Vudu as my digital provider. While I am grateful I have been able to digitalization most of my collection, and will continue to use mobile to digital, it is sad to see it go - despite its constant scanning issues!

Agreed. I was starting down the path to iTunes for all my digital copies, but then stumbled across Disc to Digital as part of Vudu. Next thing I knew, I was 100% on Vudu, with just about every eligible movie in my collection converted and many more that I didn't have shelf space for but wanted to see in my library.

D2D was my gateway drug into digital collecting.

One of the great things about D2D over M2D was D2D had no limit while M2D has a 100 per year limit. For those of us with large disc collections it may take years to convert at only 100 per year.

Be thankful M2D is still alive...d2d here all together could gone the way as CinemaNow and Flixster d2d which are non-existent. Vudu at-home d2d was problematic to say the least...for those titles that wouldn't read at-home could be taken to Walmart for in-store conversion (which is non-existent) <----this was the killer. There is a number of titles that M2D won't scan properly or at all...those titles will wait until a $4.99 sales come about. As long as M2D still exist take advantage of it but don't burn your 100 per year in the month of January...spread it out over the course of the year...like 2 a week?! Thanks Vudu for continuing the M2D program!!! Happy New Year's!

Agreed. I'm very grateful that M2D is alive and kicking.

I'm surprised the program lasted as long as it did, almost 8 years. I converted about 500 movies with it. I haven't used M2D as much, but I'm glad it's still around for others. You were warned it was going away, so if you had movies to convert, you had a month to do it.

Agreed. Mourning the loss of D2D is not the same as being unappreciative of M2D.

Dumb question time... What exactly is "Mobile to Digital"?

(I've used my mobile phone to take snapshots of some of my DVD & Blu-ray barcodes, adding the titles to my Vudu collection... but that process was called "Disc to Digital" in the Vudu phone app.)

M2D is actually shorthand for Mobile Disc-to-Digital, used as a means to distinguish it from regular D2D, which refers to the now defunct In-Home Disc-to-Digital. Unlike M2D which uses the Vudu Mobile app, D2D required the use of the Vudu To Go desktop application.

The application scanned the actual blurays and DVDs (via your computer's disc drive) rather than barcodes. It also allowed users to download movies to your laptop so you could watch them offline (hence the "To Go"). Actually, as far as I know, that part of the app still works; however, it looks like Vudu has removed the ability to download the app from their website having now replaced it with a new desktop app that you download from the Microsoft app store instead of directly from the Vudu website.

Regular D2D existed for years before Vudu added M2D functionality to their mobile apps. The ironic part is that for Mobile Disc-to-Digital you NEED to be at home as it will not work anywhere else, while the In-Home Disc-to-Digital worked from anywhere. And although that may now seem like a misnomer, the actual reason they had called it In-Home Disc-to-Digital was to distinguish it from In-Store Disc-to-Digital, which was itself discontinued about four years ago. That was when you could take your blurays and DVDs to Walmart to have them converted for you there.
