Yes, but remember the major headaches that go along with that -

With something like Chromecast, where you would control Vudu from your phone and cast it to the TV, it is the Chromecast device on the TV, not the phone, doing the streaming. With AirPlay, the phone itself ends up doing the streaming, which not only drains the phone's battery, but also makes your phone unusable during that time.

So a use case scenerio would be this - a customer sits down to watch a movie at night after work. Since they had been using their phone all day they have about 20% battery left. The movie plays only as long as their phone has battery left, and with an HDX movie I've got to think it will drain pretty fast. Also, they can't use their phone for anything else like texting or checking Facebook during the duration of the movie. And if they get a phone call, it turns off everything.

Actually, AirPlay Streaming (as opposed to AirPlay Mirroring) just sends a URL to the ATV and it does the streaming. We don't support AirPlay Mirroring for video since it's not sufficiently secure.

Android TV is also a priority. Fire TV, specifically, I doubt - I don't know much about how sideloading media apps with DRM works, but I believe an app published in the Amazon app store would require 30% gross revenue sharing, which is the same as Apple.
Thanks!!! Can't wait to be able to install Vudu app on the Google Nexus Player

Just tried Aiplay from my iPhone 6S and iPad mini 2 to the Apple TV 4. Doesn't work. No AirPlay icon on the video and if I choose AirPlay from the pop up menu it gives an error about licensing restrictions over AirPlay. Tried different movies and tv shows too. So this definitely isn't a solution for Apple TV 4. Anybody else get this to work?

That's because VUDU hasn't enabled Airplay yet, but they are working on it. It does work from other streaming providers.

I see. I guess I mis-read Jake's post above and thought he meant Airplay was currently supported.

+1, sooooo waiting on pins and needles to be able to let the kids and family use vudu with my nexus player! Love the service, but really hoping to use with our Android TV. Let me know if I can help beta test.

                Cheers.

The fact that it is coming first to the Shield TV only and not the Nexus Player is exactly what's wrong with Android TV.

Nexus player is dead. ASUS did submit a slight redesign of the Nexus to the FCC but no guarantee a new version would even get released.

This sounds interesting but what is the purpose of the hard drive? Also, will it support Vudu in Dolby Vision?

                          3 UHD
                          735 HDX
                          2 SD

The Shield TV is available in either 16GB flash or 500GB hard-drive versions.

The storage is for apps, games, music, photos, or storing television products when using it as a DVR with something like SiliconDust HDhomerun.

The 16GB also supports external hard-drives. The 500GB is just internal.

If you read the announcement it states: "The Vudu content delivery application for Google?s Android TV will support streaming of ultra-high-definition 4K movies, adding another option for premium TV owners. In addition to UHD video, Vudu promises to support Dolby Atmos surround sound audio. Dolby Atmos is a nice addition to SHIELD?s lossless audio support."

It doesn't specifically mention Dolby-Vision but it does mention UHD and Dolby Atmos. The Shield TV is HDR capable as well.

As far as I know Dolby Vision requires a hardware chip for decoding which the Shield likely does not have. I think this is the reason Roku 4 doesn't do Dolby Vision either as well as any 4K TV that isn't made to support Dolby Vision out of the gate.
