Older Disney Digital Copy on Disc, redeem to Vudu/MA?

If I were to buy an unopened/new Disney blu-ray that has the older Digital Copy on a disc, is there any way to redeem that for a digital version on Vudu/MA? Thanks.

I don’t believe so. Disney does not participate in Disc to digital. If the disc digital copy loads Into iTunes, it may give you an MA license for the title which would port to vudu, but I am not sure if it would or not.

If the code will work with iTunes, it is often SD only if it requires the disc for the Digital Copy. Try the code first on VUDU or MA.

I just tried it with a digital copy disc for a Fox blu-ray that I already owned, and it indeed was added to MA but as SD. I contacted Apple to see if this could be changed to HD, but they didn't address my question and sent me some boilerplate response about video quality.

Highly unlikely. Those codes were were for the older Disney Movies Rewards service. That service was shutdown by Disney some time ago and for the most part evolved into Movies Anywhere. Not all Disney Movie Rewards titles were eligible for Movies Anywhere. Additionally most of those old codes (as do most for legal reasons) have an expiration date, even though some work well past the date.

It’s a roll of the dice any which way. No guarantee. Your call.

DMR is now called Disney Movie Insiders. However, since you now have to link it with MA (and essentially share codes between the two), those codes may not generate digital copies like they did when they were DMR & Disney Movies Anywhere. Back in DMA days disc-based SD iTunes digital copies were upgraded to HD automatically by DMA, but that ended after DMA became MA. Those codes have all long since expired, so it's uncertain if they even work anymore. (The Windows Media options on many of those discs certainly don't work anymore.)

I went ahead and tried it with Pirates of the Caribbean: On Stranger Tides (3D pack). I tried to redeem the code directly in Movies Anywhere and Vudu but didn't work in either case. Tried the code in Disney Movie Insiders and got the points but it didn't add a copy to MA. Then went to "redeemdigitalmovie.com" which is supposed to work for this title but stated I had to put the disc in my computer to redeem. Did that and of course got an SD version in iTunes. Contacted Disney support and was told they cannot provide an HD version for me. Frustrating. I'm not sure why they can't just upgrade it for me since I clearly have (multiple) HD discs for the movie, but I guess I should be happy that I got something out of it (even though SD is pretty useless for me).

I tried the same where I called the studio (not Disney) for "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy. I have the BD trilogy but only got SD on iTunes. They told me they couldn't do anything about it.

The original intent of these early programs was to watch the HD version at home on disc and the SD version on the go with your phone or tablet.

Otherwise if you wanted HD for streaming you were supposed to buy it streaming (instead of disc)

Each of the two was seen as two different customers for two different channels of business.
