What is going on with Instawatch movies dissapearing

This is most concerning if VUDU can just remove movies from our accounts with no notice at all.

I noticed tonight that my movie list dropped by 8 movies. I don't know what movies I lost, but I have emailed support and asked them to investigate. I hope/expect all movies will be reinstated, or I will take the necessary action with my state AG's office, and with the relevant consumer protection agencies.

They are cracking down on Instawatch copies that were given to more than the original purchaser.

If you purchased discs at Walmart and your email didn't match the email you use with your Vudu account I presume will reinstate them by presenting your receipts. Whether that's worth the effort is another matter. Might be easier to redeem the codes that came with the discs.

My uncle bought a movie earlier in the year, scanned his receipt and sent me a link to redeem it onto my account. It was removed. Not cool Vudu.

This was handled in the wrong way and ended up screwing some people out of movies just because they chose to use a secondary email address that they had rather than their Walmart account email address. Many people have secondary emails because they want to control the amount of spam that they receive and they consider some emails from stores and online retailers as less important than emails from their banks and healthcare providers. The correct way to handle this would be to allow you to add a secondary email address, and then to give people a deadline to add this second email by blasting us with reminder emails to do it by such and such deadline. The wrong thing to do is what was done by giving no notice and just removing titles because the emails didn't match. This would prevent those who legitimately bought the IW titles but chose a different email from losing their movies. I understand this was done to prevent abuse, but you could have solved that problem even with allowing a secondary email address.

Actually, they did do that. They have been requiring people to link their accounts for about a month now I think. People have been talking about it over on Reddit for a while.

I had to fix my accounts a month or so ago, when I bought 2 disc, they went into a new account, but were the same email but two different accounts. Vudu support fixed the titles, then sent me a link to "merge" the accounts, but the link always threw back an error message saying to try again later. After two weeks I gave up. Now, when they "fixed" my issue, that should have also fixed the issue when my uncle gave me his link to redeem John Wick 3 months ago, if not longer, since he doesn't use digital. I guess I can't complain since I didn't buy it myself, but still.

Should we be ok if our Walmart and vudu accounts have the same e-mail and we didn't get instawatch from a secondary source?

I'm missing 9 movies, I'm just not sure which. This offers some explanation, but is still horsesh**. I paid for those. No, I don't have receipts anymore, or even all the discs. You just stole my money, Vudu. Give them back.

Even if someone did get instawatch titles from and outside source vudu broke the law removing titles. Disney sued redbox for selling codes from titles they bought to rent out. The court ruled RedBox was fully and legally allowed to so by first sale doctrine. The same can be said here, vudu could be facing civil and criminal charges.

Oh, here we go with the Google Law Degree.

"Even if someone did get instawatch titles from and outside source"

I'm not a lawyer, but I'd imagine something in the ToS says you can't do that. I'm not sure what the issue is since none of IW titles disappeared, but it sounds like people have figured out that they're cracking down on people who bought IW titles from others. I'd bet if anyone challenged people with missing titles here on where they got the titles, they'd say they lost the receipt, don't have the disc anymore etc when they really mean they bought it somewhere or from someone or traded for it.

If you have access to the Walmart account you bought discs on I'm sure Vudu will address it for you. If you've lost access I would take that up with Walmart to get the receipts, then take them to Vudu. If they don't rectify it you can take it to small claims court or if it's a large amount the terms say you're stuck with binding arbitration. I'm pretty sure small claims and abritration are going to require some kind of proof of ownership though. Forget about civil or criminal charges, that's just dumb.

I’m always amazed how people know how many movies change from there account on a day to day basis. Let alone which specific titles they are.

I’ve got Close to 3,000 titles in my Vudu account and typically, well prior to the pandemic when new major titles were still being released, I add at least one title week if not several a week. Some added my purchase, some digital code redemption, some Instawatch, etc. if I was going to be able to track every movie in my account it would require more effort than my taxes, which are WAY more complicated than 99% of the population.
