The problem isn't necessarily a tax.. the problem is that our sales tax in Florida is not the 13% that VUDU is adding to my cart right now..

This is a pretty big issue. Regardless of what some may think.
I’m willing to bet those who are sayimg “welcome to the club,” aren’t being charged a 13.5% sales tax on their movies.
They say “Contact your local legislators,” yet when we do, they don’t seem to know anything about it.

Florida state sales tax on digital goods = 0
Florida state sales tax on tangible goods = 7%

I have checked with a few others who live outside Florida and are charged taxes and it’s business as usual for them. (Meaning they’re charged their normal state tax rate.)

The whole thing seems a bit...shady on Fandango’s part.

One thing is absolutely certain. There’s no way I’ll be purchasing any more movies through the Vudu platform at a 13.5% tax rate.

I can literally go down the street and get hard copies from Walmart, Best Buy or Target at 7% and on the very rare occasion that I rent I use Redbox.

If they don’t resolve this very soon, they’re going to lose a lot of customers as well as market share. Even more if they attempt to roll this out nationwide. Guaranteed!
      It’s not rocket science.

No, if they are going to charge tax, they should charge what the normal rate is for that state. Even once they fix it, they should reimburse you for any charges over that amount. I would contact Vudu customer care if you haven't already done that. If that doesn't help, contact the state tax authority or attorney general's office.

Nobody would say what state they were from when they were complaining, which is why I said talk to your legislators. Can't really given any better advice until someone mentions their locale. In the case of NJ it may be legitimate. FL seems wrong since it doesn't appear to be calculating a proper rate regardless.

I agree with the post above. If you're from FL you should open a ticket online or by calling Vudu at 888-554-8838. The first-tier support probably won't be helpful but make sure your ticket is escalated. Do this for all the things you have been mischarged for. It's not a given that they'll correct all prior purchases without an open ticket.

I was actually referring to the VUDU CSRs & Supervisors who said this.

One even claimed that all platforms are charging their customers this rate due to an increase in streaming as a result of the pandemic.

I know for a fact that’s not true. I also confirmed through family and friends that other states are being charge their regular state tax rate. (We did a test checkout)

            They couldn’t believe it.

I have several tickets escalated and from what I understand, there are many others who’ve called in as well.

Hopefully they’ll get this resolved quickly for our sake as well as theirs.

(Losing the entire state of Florida would be a sizable hit on the bottom line.)

Ha ha ha, yeah, you can't take anything first-tier support says seriously. If a supervisor (second- or third-tier) said this that would be disappointing. Good luck!

The sales tax charged is not necessarily just your state sales tax rate. For example in my family's state they have a 6.25% state sales tax, a 2.5% county sales tax and 2.25% City sales tax. Making the tax collected 11%.

From the original post, I did not gather that the problem was an incorrect tax rate. It appeared that the issue was simply the fact that taxes were being charged at all.

If you're being charged the wrong taxes, then you should absolutely take this seriously. I would not have written "welcome to the club" if I'd understood the exact nature of what you were experiencing.

No worries. I wasn't the OP on this thread.

The fact is, regardless of what VUDU claims, still isn't a state tax on digital goods here in Florida. (We went from 0 to 13.5% overnight without notice.) That's why Florida customers were shocked.

Not to mention, the way things were handled when we called in...

The good news is the Florida Department or Revenue is now in touch with them regarding this clear tax violation on purchases.

We should have the issue resolved very soon.

Thank you for your posting. We recently identified an error in our system which went into effect at the beginning of November, where incorrect tax amounts were added to movie or TV purchases (not rentals) made in the states of Florida and Kentucky. We are working to remedy the error, which should be reflected in future purchases made in the coming days. (Note that the tax for rentals is correct; this only applies to purchases.) For our customers in Florida and Kentucky, who have made a purchase in which you were charged an incorrect tax amount, we plan to provide you a credit for your Vudu account within the next few weeks. We are sorry for any inconvenience this may have caused you and we hope we can continue to earn your business.
