LOTR and Hobbit 4K on Vudu

Hey everyone. I noticed on Vudu that there is a 4k option when purchasing lord of the rings and the hobbit movies. I wasn't sure if these are for the new 4k release or just a generic 4k upscaled version. I ask because the price is so good on Vudu. You can get the LOTR trilogy for $29.99 in 4k or LOTR Extended Trilogy for $49.99 in 4k. Whereas the hard copy in store is anywhere from $79-89. So are these the real deal?

Yes, this is the real 4k version. Streaming vendor pricing is typically less than the comparable disc price.

    521 UHD
    760 HDX
    5 SD

Released about same time as the 4K discs.

Real 4K. Not upscaled of prior release.

I purchased both the theatrical and extended versions of The Hobbit trilogy on Vudu when they were first available. Since they are Warner Bros. films will they get the free upgrade to 4k anytime soon?

We can hope. I own all the pre-4K versions myself.

But I doubt it. That's not a given for all WB titles. I think it might also depend on if WB is the production studio or just the distributer.

Yup, this. I got LOTR extended on disc, however the price (for both now) are $29.99 4K UHD extended. Great price. However I too own the HDX versions already. Wondering if these movies are going to upgrade to UHD like some other movies.

Is it possible to upgrade using disc to digital?

No, disc to digital only is for up to HDX quality. It has never gone up to UHD.

                  523 UHD
                  762 HDX

As far as Vudu exclusively is concerned this is correct.

Out of Vudu it is technically not true.

There are absurdly expensive high end options that has upgrades from HD to (better than) UHD for as little as $5 per title; more for Disney. They have the blessing of the studios as well, including Disney. But it’s a closed eco system and expensive But that does mean though that there is hope that Vudu could offer such an upgrade option from SD & HDX digital titles in the future.

So keep pushing for it people, it exists in the isolated wild, and maybe we’ll get it here.

Are there extras on Fandango, Prime Video, Google Play?

If not it seems like a (more expensive) disc package / offer. If FN had them I would think it reasonable for Vudu to add. If not, seems unlikely.

Yes, at least one of them has extras that Vudu doesn't provide. I've never been able to find how bonus features are listed on GP. This is becoming a common thing with Vudu. But I'm a Cheerleader was recently released in UHD, digital only, upgrading, the director and studio said we would get bonus features. iTunes has them, Vudu never added them. After chatting with the director on Twitter, she said Vudu should have added them as well, as should every other provider...

However, never trust Vudu/FandangoNow as offering the same just because they are owned by the same company. One still lists tv movies as episodes, while the other lists them as actual movies... but this is "per studio design" lol
