    Special Features revisited

There was a thread about this last summer, but I thought I would bring it up again as there didn't appear to be any resolution. We are pretty new to Vudu, and I still haven't quite overcome my Wife's skepticism.

We just watched "The Rocker" last night and she asked if we could see the special features that you would ordinarily get with a DVD. We generally love the "Line-O-Rama" features you usually get with a Judd Apatow movie....I don't know if there was anything like that for this title, but that is kind of the point.

There was discussion in the previous thread about a "More" button, the consensus seemed to be that it didn't really do anything except display a "coming soon" message. Since I am coming at this the next day from work, I can't confirm or deny this.

Needless to say, the apparent lack of Special Features is not helping me win her over. Am I just missing something?

No you aren't missing anything. There is no support for the special features from the DVD. That's probably a technically difficult thing to implement. The "more" button right now can basically let you move through longer descriptions when you are looking at the movie info. If you see the description end with a little "more" at the end, hitting the "more" button will take you to the 2nd/subsequent part of it.

DVD aditional content is all about licensing and marketing. On PPV systems like Uverse and Comcast you can see some of the additional content as long as the movie is in rotation but none of the "special features" that are interactive are available from what I can see.

Some movies have special features available for rent or purchase but not many. There's a number of issues. First, simply the way you send the file stream over the internet - bundling in the features would make the amount of data needed to be sent much larger which would be problematic. Second, as Ron noted, there's licensing issues. Generally the content owners of the special feature material are completely different than the content owners of the actual movie. In Hollywood it's all about who owns what content and who gets paid for it, etc. Third, I'm not sure how well interactive features would work on a platform like the Vudu. It would be difficult to implement.

The Vudu box isn't going to solve 100% of your entertainment needs. If you want the extras, then I think you will need to buy or rent the DVD. But that means driving to the video store or waiting for Netflix to deliver. If you want to watch a movie NOW and not wait, then Vudu is perfect.

"More" button also allows you to rate movies -- http://forum.vudu.com/showthread.php?t=5517

I'd like to see the 'more' button in use during films, it would be a cool feature. Even if they take what ever database info they have for the film and superimpose it (text only) for quick access instead of superimposing "coming soon". Director, cast, year of release, that sort of thing.

I'd really prefer for "More" to bring up the metadata (cast, crew, rating, etc) while watching the movie. From using DVRs all the time, I'm used to an "Info" button that gives me the data on the currently displayed show.

                Re: Special Features revisited

We are new owners of VuDu. Both of us need to be won over. We watched 'Burn After Reading' in HDX. To us the picture was ordinary quality but sound was extra nice. We have a 45 inch 4 yr. old Aquos that came with an external tuner box. There are 5 Monster Centra speakers, a Monster Power HTS5100, and a Denon AVR3805. Cox is our cable provider.

The Aquos LCD is 1080i. Does your flat screen need to be 1080p to get the best picture ossible? Ours is 1080i.

When the Geek Squad installer left our house we noticed he used the composite cables that came with the VuDu but plugged them into the component jacks of the VuDu. Is this right? The Aquos has HDMI and the Aquos box has HDMI but he did not use HDMI. Is this why our picture was ordinary or does the movie have to have special effects to notice the HDX properties.

The VuDu unit ran extremely hot all during the download and viewing.

We share the Ethernet with a PC in another room so when not VuDu-ing we have to remove the Ethernet and are therefore not on their P2P net. We were told by BB sales that this is ok? Anyone doing same?

Our first post and we appreciate any comments at all.
