Regarding the HDX upgrade and the Universal Monsters

I just received the email saying:

Trouble viewing this email? View it in a browser.
    VUDU | Movies & TV
Your HD just got better. Welcome to HDX.
    Congratulations Joe,

Your viewing experience just got upgraded.

We're making some improvements at VUDU, and we're sharing the wealth. That means your movies are getting a facelift - free of charge. That's right. We're giving you HDX for your old HD. Woo-hoo!

Over the next week, all of the HD titles currently in your library will automatically be upgraded to HDX. So the next time you watch, you'll be watching in up to 1080p resolution*. It's your movies and TV, just better. And we wouldn't have it any other way.

    Awesomeness. Delivered automatically.

That's right, there's nothing you need to do to enjoy HDX. Our new HDX upgrade is designed to automatically optimize your stream to the highest resolution for your internet connection and device.

So enjoy your upgrades and watch a movie or two. Bask in the glory of HDX and watch in up to 1080p.

If you're curious, find more info on the upgrade here.

    Sincerely,

    The VUDU Team

This email is a VUDU service message.

*Resolution will be both device and internet bandwidth dependent. Titles you purchased in SD will remain SD, and titles with SD or HD streaming restrictions on computers and laptops will remain either SD or up to 720p.

Please note that all product prices and availability are subject to change.

I sincerely hope that this doesn't mean that the HD versions are going away!!
A lot of the classic universal monster films like Frankenstein and the Mummy and the Invisible Man are in the wrong aspect ratio and look AWFUL in HDX, but are in the correct aspect ratio in HD . These films can really only be viewed in HD since the aspect ratio problem is so bad in HDX. Please don't take away the HD versions

What if my TV is only 720p?
HDX streams in up to 1080p. So if your TV is only 720p, you?ll stream in 720p. If you upgrade to a 1080p or higher TV in the future, all your HDX titles will stream in up to 1080p. https://blog.vudu.com/?p=11709

it seems if we set our tv's to 720 it would default to HD i know it does not for sure mean it will be in the correct aspect ratio, its all i could find on the issue

Re: Regarding the HDX upgrade and the Universal Monsters

I suspect if your TV is only 720P - and receives an HDX stream, it will only down-convert to 720P (rather than try to grab a non-existent HD version of the film)

I suppose the difficulty is that the HD version of the film wasn't merely a lower-res version of the HDX file; it was it's own file (sometimes with a different aspect ratio). Hence the reason HD version might look better than the HDX version when both were available.

Aspect ratio and image quality should certainly be at the forefront of Vudu's content team decisions.
