For years I only collected physical media, first blu rays, then UHD 4K. I have a little over 400 4Ks. An old service Vudu used to offer I was addicted to, and while I don't remember what it was called, you could buy a 4K disk early, and get the digital version much earlier. As the technology advanced, I found myself watching the digital version and by the time the 4K disk would arrive, I would just put it on the shelf. When that service ended, like many, I huffed and puffed and thought it was like the end of the 4K era altogether. But without realizing it, that service exposed me to the digital side of things, during a time when I was a staunch supporter of physical media, and most times physical media only. During the pandemic, we have all had to learn how to do things differently. Personally I have gone full circle. Looking back in my library, my last 50 purchases have been digital only, and most of those instances that was the only way to get the movie.
From a technical standpoint, the digital UHD 4K movie we can get today from Vudu is so much better than the same format was two years earlier, so that's a great thing. The downside to those last 50 purchases, is I don't have a physical disk as a backup like I was so used to. While I may have never taken the wrapper off the 4K disk when it arrived in the mail, I knew if the day ever came Vudu went "poof" I would still have my UHD 4K movie. That is a little concerning, but it must not be too concerning as I just purchased a movie about 20 minutes ago! Ha! Seriously, as the world continues to open I hope the opportunity to purchase UHD 4K disks will return (not from Vudu but from retailers in general). Hollywood took such a major blow from the pandemic, and all the industries connected to them suffered too. Bring on Top Gun 2, Mission Impossible 7, Red 3, and "Bond, Jane Bond"....at this point, I'd watch another Pirates of the Caribbean,,,,whoa whoa, skip that one! Sorry Jack!
