    iOS VUDU 5.0!

    All new update.

    HDX streaming on most titles.

    And other stuff...

    HDX via AirPlay!

Questions for Vudu though - why is it available only for some titles on the app? Everything is available via Google Cast...

On the same token - I watched a movie via AirPlay and then Casting, and it appeared the AirPlay one was quite a bit softer. Am I just imagining that? Is the video being sent from the phone to the TV or is it playing on the Apple TV itself?

In lieu of porting this app to TVos, you know what would be nice? Connect it to Siri so we can speak a title and have it fire right up

      Re: iOS VUDU 5.0!

FYI, there is a long-running thread about this in the set-top box forum here:
      https://forum.vudu.com/showthread.ph...-TV-App-Please!

I just posted to that thread, but I'll repeat my comments here...

I just tried it on my ATV2 (720p) and ATV3 (1080p). I got error messages when trying to AirPlay to the ATV2, but it's possible that there's some other issue there.

For the ATV3 (1080p), it worked well. A few observations:
      1) I tried a Sony movie and a Disney movie and both worked fine. I was anticipating the Disney movies being excluded from compatibility, so this was nice. Cranston, you stated that not all movies worked, so I'm curious about that. Which movies? Jake, any insight on that?
      2) Cranston also stated that movies looked noticeably softer (compared to what?). In my case, my 1080p ATV3 is hooked up to a 720p TV, so I'm not pushing the resolution limits, but at 720p, it looked very sharp to me. Note that I did not do a head-to-head comparison of the same movie with VUDU on my TiVo.
      3) I was curious how it would work with the ATV buffer. When you watch an iTunes movie, hit pause, wait a few minutes, and hit play again, you can see that a good chunk of the "look ahead" buffer is populated. iTunes movies are streamed at their full bitrate and populate the buffer. If you have a poor internet connection (or a temporary slowdown in your internet speed), the ATV essentially downloads the full movie (at the full bitrate they offer) to that buffer, so you don't suffer any quality downgrading or pauses in the movie. It looks like VUDU AirPlaying keeps things playing in real-time, so if I pause the movie, wait a few minutes, and hit play again, I don't see any of the buffer getting utilized. As such, I suspect that if you don't have great internet speeds you will either suffer pauses and/or the picture quality might get auto-downgraded. Again, I'd be curious if Jake has any insight on this.

Cranston, in the thread I linked to above, Jake had indicated (a couple months back?) that the app would *not* use AirPlay Mirroring, so the ATV should be handling all of the processing/internet usage, relegating your iPhone (or whatever) to just being an optional remote control. As I stated above, the PQ looks good to me, but my test so far was using a 720p TV. I'll try to test it out later and output it to my 1080p projector and compare that to the output from the VUDU app on my TiVo.

FWIW, my ATV is an occasional-use device for me. I use my TiVo as my main device for DVR, VUDU, Netflix, and Amazon Prime. But it's nice to see that we now have another device that can handle playing VUDU movies. A dedicated app on the newest ATV models would be even better, but at least this is something. And I'm glad that it's using "offloaded" AirPlay instead of Mirroring, since the latter provides noticeably worse PQ.

        CT Scott,

When I said it looked softer - as I said in my post, I AirPlayed a movie from Vudu to the Apple TV, then Google Casted the same movie to the same TV. The Casting method gave a noticeably better picture.

Regarding not every movie being available... a large part of my collection only gives SD playback on my phone with the message "Sorry! Due to licensing restrictions, AirPlay is currently not supported for this content"

It's possible that ATV decided to stream a lower bitrate/resolution than Chromecast - Apple's HLS player is a bit more conservative than the player we use for Cast. Also, try waiting a bit longer to compare, it may be that ATV started up at a lower rate/resolution but will bump up to 9Mbps 1080p eventually (again, it's more conservative in those decisions, though it does seem to remember your B/W history eventually).

What is the Extras+ functionality referred to? Is that the same as this: http://blog.vudu.com/?p=10895? If so, I don't see the Extras+ available for any of those movies on the new iOS app.

I was wondering the same thing. I tried 5 to 10 movies in my collection (that have Extras+ on web) and couldn't find any with Extras+ on iOS.

A few random ones I checked had them - Ghostbusters and Spectre. A title like Batman v. Superman didn't...

You can stream with this update but all downloads are showing SD for me.

I see it's available with Suicide Squad. I do not see the Extras+ available for the other movies that should have them though. It appears to be a separate thing. From the pop-up it says iOS exclusive extras.

We have Extras+, Vudu Extras, and now iOS Extras? Can someone from Vudu shed some light on this?

I was hoping with the introduction of Vudu Extras that that would replace Extras+, since it's nice, simple, and available on all devices. But it appears that not only is Extras+ staying, but now we're getting yet another iteration in iOS Extras.

Extras+ is available on iOS at the moment, Android will get this feature sometime this week we anticipate.
