    Playback via a PC?

I'm not sure if this has been discussed, but searching around i haven't found any thread on it.

Can vudu do playback to my laptop? If you're wondering why, the scenario is when i take the kids skiing the cabin we go to doesn't have a TV. So i usually bring my laptop and a bunch of DVD's to keep them busy for an hour or two at night. So i'm trying to figure out if i own a movie on vudu, bring it along, use it without the network connection (since i would have purchased the movie and it would be there locally) how could i play it back on my laptop?

    PS it's a Dell D610. TIA

    Re: Playback via a PC?

Hi Shaw, welcome to the Vudu forum.

Currently there is no support for a PC client to playback movies. This is a fairly popular request, and I hope it happens in the future. As an alternative, you could simply pack up your vudu and take it to the cabin. It's smaller than your laptop, and it doesn't need an internet connection to watch shows that have already been downloaded.

In that case, I bet the kids would love to get a small portable projector for Chistmas.....

The only option I can think of is to use a S-Video to USB adapter like http://www.compusa.com/products/prod...ct_code=318714 to get the video into the PC. However, the VUDU might have Macrovision protection which would prevent this from working?

              Re: Playback via a PC?

Thanks all, good tips. I think i'll try the S video to USB method first before I buy a moniter... less to haul around, in fact i'm looking at a laptop screen right now and want to leverage my existing investments before adding more luggage

If that don't work i guess LCD is the way to go... anyone see any reason the S video to USB wouldn't work?

EDIT: actually the poor reviews of the adaptor might be the number one hurdle... but theoretically anyone see a prob with this type of solution?

Yes VUDU has protected streams...trying to capture the video though a video capture device, VCR, DVD Recorder will not work.

Will this device appear as a recording/capture device though or will it simply pass the video through and appear like a monitor or other display device???

                    Re: Playback via a PC?

You can use a slingbox to do it.. just need the new internet commands for the vudu box so you can control it on the road.. I will be working on this sometime around Xmass if I have time.

What about using a TV tuner Card with HDMI imput, they make a usb and a PCMI adapters, it would be like plugging into a tv

The biggest problem for this is that you can't use SlingPlayer to control the box - you have to have a terminal window or some other connection.

Also, I think the original OP indicated that he wouldn't have internet access at his cabin...

Do they make these bad boys that operate as USB dongles? That would be cool. I've not seen one though...

They are not passthru..they are a "digitizing" device that converts the analogue video into digital on the PC and then to the screen or HD. I have a video capture device and have tested with the VUDU and you don't want to see the results. It has both composit and s-video capabilties and both have the bars and noise in the video stream.
