    Rent vs Own Library

First let me start by saying that I LOVE my Vudu. I'm enjoying it immensely.

However, I'm getting concerned about the number of movies that are only available to own and not for rent. Out of the 24 movies in the "Coming Soon" list only 8 are listed as available for rent. If movies don't have a "available for rent date" listed on them does this mean that they don't currently have plans for them to be rented or just that the rental date is unkown?

I realize that the studios control this but I really hope that as this thing continues to evolve that most (if not all) all of the movies in the library are available to rent. I just can't see buying a movie that I've never seen before. I only buy movies that I've watched before and I doubt that I'm alone on this (but I could be wrong).

For the life of me I cannot figure out what the studios would not want to make all movies available for rent - especially the more popular main stream movies. Take Superbad as an example. I've been dying to see that movie and it's on the Vudu but only for $19.99 purchase price. I'm just NOT going to fork over $20 to see a movie for the first time.

Anyway - here's to hoping that the studios will "see the light" and help make Vudu the huge success that it deserves to be. I think they've done almost everything in their control very, very well and are showing commitment to continually developing the software.

    Re: Rent vs Own Library

I can't go into any details here but let's just say that the licensing arrangements with the studios are VERY complex. It's not just a straightforward process to get movies to be rentable and own-able. This doesn't make it right, but there's a reality here that won't change overnight.

As for movies becoming rentable, I think the goal is to have everything rentable. Spiderman 3 hasn't had a "rent on" date since it first became available. However, now it does have a date when it will be rentable. I hope I'm not saying something I shouldn't as I may be on a different database release than the general public. But I believe that as soon as Vudu has the license date for the rental, it should be put on the box.

Now, there's another issue with rentals/purchases as well, that I'll bring up in advance to hopefully soften any complaints. And that is the cable channel blackouts. When a movie goes to premier on a channel like HBO, it will be removed from the Vudu and be unavailable for rental or purchase during the time it is on the premium channel on which it premiered. It should then come back into the Vudu library once that is over. Nothing can be done about this at this point - yeah I know - it bites...

The good news is that if you get those channels and have a Tivo, you can just record it and watch it as many times as you like and keep it for as long as you like and the studios will make less money because of it. It makes you wonder.

I hooked up my Vudu on Friday and have really enjoyed it so far. The Bourne movies look great in HD.

I may be getting a little ahead of myself here but I was wondering. If you were to have two boxes. Say one in the living room and one in the bedroom. Would you be able to view your purchased movies on both boxes or just the box the purchase was made on? Same question for rentals.

        Thanks.

          Welcome to the Vudu Forum!

In home streaming between units is not yet supported. I do think this is a good idea, and I hope it happens.

Also, movie purchases on each box are treated independently at this time. Meaning - purchase a movie on your first box and then if you purchase the same movie on your second box, you will get charged again for it.
