Five Versions of Thunderbolt (1995) via Movies Anywhere across five services.

I did this for fun, and I thought I'd share.

This isn't to say which service is better, or which version is better, but it is interesting none the less.

I bought Thunderbolt via Vudu, which only offers the SD version.

The video below shows the opening credits across 5 services. iTunes is not included, but is the same as the Vudu version.

    The video goes...

YouTube - [SD] - Golden Harvest Logo with Chinese, Thunderbolt logo in red, 2.39:1
Vudu - [SD] - Golden Harvest Logo w/o Chinese, fuzzy yellow text, no movie title!, 2.39:1 within 4:3
Fandangonow - [SD] - New Line Cinema logo, G.H. Logo w/ Chinese, Thunderbolt logo in yellow, 2.39:1
Amazon - [SD] - New Line Cinema logo, G.H. w/ Chinese, Thunderbolt in yellow, image stretched too tall! (16:9)
Movies Anywhere - [Unknown] - G.H. w/ Chinese, Thunderbolt logo in red, 2.39:1.

While you may be able to fiddle with settings to get the Amazon video to appear correct, the Vudu version (which is shared with iTunes) is 4:3 with black bars, and of pretty low quality in general.

Movie Anywhere and YouTube seem to share the save version, and both play back looking equally as good.

Fandangonow's version and Movie Anywhere/Google's versions both look good, and based on the open sequences look like two different versions. I don't know if that applies to any of the content of the film. I also don't know if either one actually looks better upon closer inspection, just both look satisfyingly good for a SD movie.

So there you have it, an example of how one movie can play back very differently across 5 services.
