    Vudu fan running

    Hi,

new vudu owner. I love the whole concept, purchased the box on Friday, have watched 3 HD movies so far, and all have been excellent.

Is it common to be able to hear the fan running when the unit is not in use? The top does not feel warm to the touch, the vents are not obstructed, but yet I can hear it. If that's normal, then it's ok...I just don't want the unit to flame out on me.

Yes, the box will make noise. Turning it "off" just turns off the video output. The box continues to run, download data, provide bits of movies to others, etc. The noise you hear may be the disk drive spinning as well as the fan.

You can't turn off the box. it is always on, but it does only draw a small amount of power.

You must have very good hearing as I can't hear the unit unless I'm next to it. Perhaps, I'm just used to the noise because I got a TiVo & Drobo running.

I'd say you are fine unless you can hear the unit from your couch/chair and it approaches PS3/360 levels.

P.S. Even when the box is not in use, it's actually doing stuff in the background -- keeping the database with movies up to date, etc.

I can't hear the fan in any of my 3 Vudu's. Perhaps you got a unit with a bad fan. Can you measure the loudness or tell us something common that is equally as loud?

The fan is there. i can hear it in my three VUDU boxes too when it's quiet, but I can also easily hear a fan in a tiVo at 15 feet away.

I can easily hear the fan in my vudu. Yours must be too far away.

I sit 8' away from my 110" screen, and the Vudu is in the cabinet below the screen. From my eyes I'm sitting just the right distance from the screen

I didnt say anything about where you were sitting in relation to the screen, or its size. I was talking about how far away from the vudu you are.

It is about as loud as others on the thread have described it. less noisy than a pc fan for sure. usually I only hear it if it is late at night or early before anyone is up and there isn't the typical household noise going on.

sounds like it's ok. thanks to all for the feedback.
