Something was nefarious. We have no idea what redwein was up to. He could have been attempting to steal from the Salvation Army kettles. In fact, how do we know redwein is an actual Vudu user and not just a plant from Vudu? After all, he praises the product, claims he owns five of them and so therefore, he must be a Vudu employee or worse yet, member of the executive staff. There is no smoke so there must be fire!

We could go on and on with this rot if we wanted. If someone feels you are guilty anything you say or don't say can and will be used against.

Hey Max, have you stopped beating your wife yet?

This is the sort of mentality I see on display here.

            Re: Vudu & Open Source?

You guys are reading a conspiracy into my first post.
While doing research on this product I saw a teardown site which said "confirmed linux OS" or something similar, yet I saw no disclosure anywhere on vudu website, forums, or documentation. For gods sake even my HD DVD player plays by the rules, acknowledges the code they used, and have a download site.

So, I wanted to see whats up with vudu.

And, no offense to the mods, but there are many, many companies (big and small) which did not divulge their use of OS code until people started asking questions and coaxed them to comply with the license. I usually dont take on faith. Plus what happens to the mods credibility if someone later shows they have in fact hijacked OS code?

Trust but verify is a good approach I think.

            Case closed.

            Thank You

              Re: Vudu & Open Source?

After doing some research (which I will not divulge unless specifically requested lest someone accuse me of breaking TOS) I have independently determined what I believe caused this "Linux OS confirmed" issue. The partitions use a common Linux format. Nothing further can be determined (at least my an amateur like me) due to the heavy encryption. What does this mean? Absolutely nothing! You don't need to disclose the partition formatting whether it be fat, ntsf or reiser fs. It doesn't matter. It doesn't even mean that there is linux underneath the encryption, at all. The guy (as far as I can tell) is simply assuming a Linux OS because of how the drive is formatted. You know what they say about assumptions. I simply have to give Vudu the benefit of the doubt until they give me a reason not to.

                Re: Vudu & Open Source?

I thought a little about how this whole thread played out and then it dawned on me. Every software company that I have worked for (spanning almost 25 years) has prohibited all employees from publicly discussing any legal issues or proprietary technology. This even covers answering allegations that have no merit since words have a funny way of coming back and hurting you. Since answering the original question would have required divulging something about their proprietary technology and giving a legal opinion, there is no way that any employee would ever have been able to respond in any way on this forum. For matters like this, the only communication that would ever be allowed would be through the legal department, and then, only when properly presented. I'll bet that is what is going on here.

                  Re: Vudu & Open Source?

I just was mucking about the Vudu website here and found this:

                  http://images.vudu.com/v4/VUDU_Softw...tributions.pdf

I thought it was appropriate to list in this thread. It was simply in the documentation section listed above...

                    Re: Vudu & Open Source?

Ah, so the Vudu's software must be based on NetBSD, since they're complying with clause 3:

The VUDU product includes software developed by the University of California, Berkeley and its contributors.
