Netflix Offers Unlimited Online Viewing to Customers

    From Gizmodo:

I realize that Netflix service is PC only, but man, it sure would be nice to have a flat-fee unlimited viewing on Vudu

Many of us have PCs connected to our TVs.

      Hmmm....

Netflix viewing is not really instant and I doubt the quality is as good.

Oh gee, look, they have 5000 movies/TV shows available in their library. Why does that number seem vaguely familiar?

Could it be that Netflix is under the same licensing restraints as Vudu?

I've got room for vudu & netflix.
There's a lot I don't like about vudu. It's not the netflix/blockbuster replacement I'd hoped for - yet. But it may get there. I'll be patient.

I agree it's not where it should be yet. Sadly, with studios wanting to protect legacy business more than jump into new ventures, this is what we have to deal with. They fought tooth and nail against VHS and Beta, then rentals, then DVDs, and now digital. They'll come around eventually. I don't think they have a choice...

Would you do that just for the pricing model? It doesn't look like you get anything extra with Netflix and going through the computer sounds like extra work, regardless of whether you can display it on your TV.

The pricing model is huge, yes.
I've got a PC connected to my 119" screen. It's not difficult to browse the web. This isn't any more difficult than that.

I've done the whole PC connected to the TV thing, via my HTPC, through various big screens (Plasma, rear projection, LCD, etc), and my experience has always been the quality of the movies through the PC are no where near as good as doing direct HDMI from my dvd or HDVD or vudu to my 1080p big screens.

As for ease of use, I would disagree that having to pull out a keyboard and mouse, load a web browser, search by keyboard what your looking for, etc are easier then picking up a remote and pressing a button to find what your looking for. Granted, we are not talking that much difference, but I would not put them in the same category of ease, regardless of how difficult you find web browsing.

I agree with rstone. Clearly I know how to use a web browser. It's just not something I want to do while I am sitting on my sofa looking for a movie.

I've done the whole Netflix thing on the tv and the quality stinks. Even with a really fast internet connection, 1080p hdmi output and a really fast computer, there is just no real comparison. I love my vudu and have recommended it to everyone I know. Even have it on my signature on DTV forums to try and get people to check it out. My only complaint is not enough HD content, but I know that will come in time.

Amen to that, redwein. The last thing I want to see at the end of the day is another computer.

Re: Netflix Offers Unlimited Online Viewing to Customers

Watched a movie on my big screen tonight with netflix.

Quality probably isn't as good as vudu. I watched Hitcher 2 (available on vudu as well). But watching it on netflix didn't cost me a dime. I had guests over watching it as well, and everyone was impressed. Pic quality was very good. Not great, but very good.

I already have an HTPC, along with a gyration mouse & keyboard. Launching the movie was a breeze. I first had to do the one-time software install (took less than a minute). We were watching a movie about a minute after doing that.

Now that I have the software installed, I won't need my keyboard to browse anymore. I can just use my mouse and search easily enough by genre. Sure, the interface isn't as slick as vudu, but the process was still plenty easy. The cost was included in my netflix subscription. Play was instant.

I can't download a movie to my PC and play it back elsewhere later, but that's a non-issue for me.

Vudu still has a lot going for it, but I'm much happier with Netflix' tv offerings. It'll be interesting to see who wins longterm with content. However, if I find something on netflix that I can't instant play, I can just add it to my queue.

For now, it's nice having both options.

Just one last point - for those against an HTPC, my HTPC gives me big screen gaming (so does my xbox, but I can't play flightsim x on the 360), I get amazon unbox, netflix, internet, etc. I really don't understand the aversion to an HTPC when it really provides a LOT of value - more value than any other device I can imagine.

To be accurate, you pay a subscription fee that allows you to watch the Netflix movies so it isn't true that it didn't cost you a dime. They have a different pricing scheme which was already noted. Who knows? That could change in the future.

I'm not knocking what you are doing and I'm glad it works for you. I currently don't use Amazon Unbox and Comcast OnDemand because I prefer the Vudu experience that much more. For similar reasons, I don't want my computer to be involved.

Re: Netflix Offers Unlimited Online Viewing to Customers

I'm wondering how Netflix is going to cover the licensing costs of this new distribution model. They most likely have to pay the studios something for every download. And by not charging, that means they are losing money on the deal. We all know Netflix is working on their own set top box (they hired Mr. ReplayTV, Anthony Wood, away from Roku for that). So perhaps they are promoting the free download model for a while to get people hooked on it and then try to transition them to a set top box. Only time will tell...
