    State of the Vudu Union

I have read and read and read these forums until my eyes are screaming to just fall out and die. The same arguments seem to come up over and over. I hope to state these arguments, and give my thoughts on them.

    Value vs Lifestyle Argument

    Example statements:

Why does this box cost so much when I can go down to Blockbuster and rent on release day?
A DVD has so many extra features and costs about the same and I can lend it out, why would I use Vudu?
Um, have you ever heard of the microwave? What does it do that an oven doesn't do? Do you even know what it cost when it came out? But for better or worse, the microwave spoiled us as a society with regards to convenience.

We often talk about the convenience of not having to go to Blockbuster or Bestbuy, but what about the convenience of not having to shuffle through your DVDs? I don't know the last time I shuffled through my CDs to find a song I wanted to hear... Vudu has the potential to do to Video what iTunes and the iPod did to music (and it has more to do with convenience that with portability).

    Initial Investment Arguement

    Example Statements:

Vudu costs too much considering it's limited feature set
    $400?!? ZOMG WOW *$%@!!!!!!!
    Then Now
    iPhone $600 $400 (only like 6 months!)
    VCR $1200 $30
    DVD $900 $49
    3do $800 $40 (failed product)
Laserdisc $900 $100 (psuedo failed product)

(based on 5 minutes internet research, some of these may have been more expensive then and even cheaper now)

You get what I am saying. We are early adopters. Prices drop as manufacturing costs drop as production increases due to demand. A little thing called capitalism, although I hear it isn't taught in schools anymore.

    Remote Argument

    Example Statement:

I want a remote with 15482 buttons and the ability to go to the scene I am thinking of at the touch of a button. It should be IR, Bluetooth, RF and Wifi to run through my network. I want removable faceplates so that it can look like I want it to and um, it needs to fit in my hand without making my arm tired from holding it up.
    You're a flippin idiot.

No, really, the iPod analogy is truly appropriate here. There were mp3 players long before the iPod hit the scene, but the interface is was MADE the iPod. It certainly wasn't Apple's then dead horse reputation. The remote is as close to perfect as any I have ever used and I won't even defend it. =)

    Closed Captioning or Subtitles Arguement

    Example Statements:

That there feriner talks funny and acunterstand im. Culdja add them werds ta the bodum uv tha TV. And make um move slower please...
Learn to speak, hear and read.

I am deaf, when is closed captioning going to be available?
Be thankful you aren't blind. Talk about killing your Vudu experience!

=) No, really, my grandfather is deaf and my wife can't understand anything but an "American" (read - tv) accent. It seems the technology behind the streaming video eliminates the ability to closed caption using current captioning technology. Vudu seems to be working this issue, but keep preaching brother, my deaf Grandfather is counting on us to prod Vudu along.

    Content Arguement

    Example Statements:

Every video every created isn't on this box! It will never succeed and I want my money back!
Talk to the studios, Vudu is doing all it possibly can to get as much content as it can for us. It is certainly in Vudu's best interest to do so.

    Where's the Pr0n?
    Go away perv

    Forum Arguement

    Example Statements:

The moderators suck and vehemently attack even the slightest hint of disappointment in Vudu!
The moderators are enthusiasts who have proven themselves trustworthy enough to moderate these forums. But they were enthusiasts first. I promise you, Vudu wouldn't put people who didn't promote their product in charge of these forums, regardless of how good they would be at moderating. That would just be bad business. =)

    You all suck!
Sorry. I have my good days and my bad days. I am truly sorry that I started off on such a bad foot. Call it a bad couple of days. =)

So um, did I cover the most common questions? If not, expect a reply with more of the most commons coming soon to a Vudu near you. (Wouldn't it be great to hear that phrase promoting movies on tv? /add moment)
