    OK guys,

Re: Q1 2008 Movie Database Poll

I went to watch a movie the other night. We had a lot of choices of movies we hadn't yet seen, but were disappointed some movies were buy only. We could rent them from netflix or blockbuster, but not on vudu.

    That's still a major disappointment.

But we still had a lot of movies we hadn't seen and were able to find something we all could agree on.

It seems like it's getting better, but until all movies are available for rent, I don't see how it can get over 3 stars.

That was one of my dilemmas with posting this poll. It's hard to get a true feeling of the database since everyone puts a different value on the movies.

Some people feel there are just too many holes in the database.
Some people would be ecstatic if all existing movies were rentable.
Some people won't be happy until there is HD.
Some people are happy with it the way it is..

I'd love to concentrate on if you are happy with the titles that are available period (meaning don't take rentability into the question). But I know that's not going to happen.

If there are any major announcements and/or releases coming out of CES, we'll post up a new poll.

        Also -

In the interest of "full disclosure" for people who feel the "evangelist" program is full of shills and unethical: There are at least 2 evangelists who have voted to give the database 2 stars.

I admit I was happy when I had company over and we were looking for movies to watch. The decision of which movie to pick was difficult as there were many we hadn't seen. I think our first two choices (the brothers solomen and Superbad) were both purchase only, but we still had more than ample to choose from. We filtered based on genre and last 12 months.

I know it's not vudu's fault, but everything should be available for rent.
CES will be interesting, but it'll be interesting what the competition does as well.

Competition is good right now. The more players, the more the studios are going to have to loosen up the content rules...

I gave it 2 stars too. I feel it's somewhere between 2 and 3, but I voted 2 to emphasize the point that we'd like to see more choices.

Also, I'd like to say that even though Vudu may have the most on-demand titles (i.e more than cable VOD or Netflix WatchNow), probably a lot of users -- myself included -- are comparing the availability to Netflix and Blockbuster (online operations which have more choices) when it comes to rentals and brick & mortar stores and Amazon when it comes to purchases.

I am comparing it to VOD because that makes the most sense to me. I know I can get DVDs from a variety of sources but I didn't buy Vudu as a way to just watch movies. I bought it for VOD because that is the only thing that is really interesting to me. I have been waiting and hoping for such a device because dealing with DVDs has become an unworkable solution for me.

You have to remember that, on any given day, you can go to your Vudu box and watch any movie in the library. With Netflix, etc. You have at most a few movies to choose from because that is all you will physically have in your posession at any one time. You had to choose your movies at least a day in advance. My mood concerning what I want to watch in a movie really depends on how I feel at the time I want to watch the movie. Sometimes it depends on who I have over. Physically going to Blockbuster isn't acceptable as it takes way too much time and my mood to even watch a movie goes away. Only VOD really supports what I want to do.

In order to be able to have a large selection available to me when I wanted to watch a movie, I had to build my own library. Right now it is about 700 movies. That became an unworkable solution until I dumped boatloads of money into organizing and creating my own VOD solution. I don't want to do that any more.

So that is why I compare Vudu to VOD only, since it gives me the ability to do something that I couldn't do well before at a fraction of the cost. If I can rent any title in the library at any time, there is no reason for me to ever buy another movie. So I would be replacing not just Netflix for rentals, but outright purchasing of DVDs as well. It is way more than just being able to watch "Transformers" because it has just come out and I had it on my list.

Redwein, I understand your argument and that's why I am not saying that EVERYONE feels like I do. However, from reading this forum it appears there are quite a few people who see Vudu as Netflix/Blockbuster/Amazon replacement (now, this may not be the view that Vudu wants to project, but that's another topic). Although, I have been here just a short time, so maybe people who bought into Vudu earlier felt different than more recent wave.

Was there ever a poll that discussed which source of content do people want Vudu to replace: cable VOD, Netflix/Blockbuster Online, B&M stores, etc.?

That poll would need to allow multiple votes per user.

Let me put in my two cents here.. I feel Vudu is and will need to be not only a VOD service, but also a replacement to Netflix, Blockbuster and the like. A day after purchasing my Vudu box, I ended my Netflix account. So are my expectations high? I think not. Just as with the case when Netflix first started, title availability will be less than optimal. That said, given time, Vudu will compete with if not eventually replace Netflix and others.

So, you're taking a poll of whether there should be another poll!!?? Sorry, couldn't resist....

If so, then yes; I think it would put some great context around user expectations for the service.

Do you mind if we wait until after CES before we put up the new poll? Not that I know anything specific being announced that would influence opinions....

For me, VUDU replaces the video rental store about 6 blocks away. After my cable bill grew beyond belief (digital, HD, premium channels, etc.), I dropped back to basic cable and began watching more movies at home. I choose films according to my mood which eliminated my premiere NetFlix subscription about 6 months after their launch in '99. And I don't want to deal with a computer when I settle in for my escape.

VUDU delivers big time for me. I've been enjoying digging around in all the genres and sorting methods. I have searched for a half dozen movies I didn't find, but in the process of all my searching have moved about 52 movies into my wish list folder. Geez.... considering VUDU's 'just launched' status, I'm more than happy with the film choices and I suspect I won't be through those 52 before another 1,000 films are available.

The cherry on top.... the delicious remote. I handed it to a ten year old last week and said nothing. He asked nothing and intuitively figured it out in about 120 seconds. He said, "wow, this feels good in your hand, hunh." Indeed.
