VUDU EXPANDS HIGH DEFINITION CONTENT AVAILABLE THROUGH ON-DEMAND SERVICE

VUDU Adding more than 70 High Definition Feature Films for Ultimate In-Home Viewing Experience, Including Transformers, The Italian Job, and War?More to Come

Consumer Electronics Show?January 06, 2007?VUDU Inc., the company that brings instant access to video-entertainment to the living room, announced today that it is greatly expanding the high-definition (HD) movies available through the VUDU box. By the end of January, 70 HD movies will be available for customers to rent and watch instantly. More HD movies will be added to VUDU over the coming months as the studios make their films available.

"With today's announcement, VUDU is continuing to deliver on its promise to make HD content as simple and convenient for customers to enjoy as traditional formats," said Tony Miranz, VUDU's co-founder and EVP of Sales and Business Development. "As more movie fans invest in large-screen HD televisions, VUDU is pleased to provide an ever-expanding range of top-quality films formatted specifically for high quality HD viewing."

Playback of the HD movies will be instant provided the Internet connection to the home network is consistently 4 Mbps or greater. Those with lower or fluctuating bandwidth will experience some delay before viewing can begin.

VUDU customers will be able to rent HD new releases for $5.99 and HD classics for $3.99. The offering will include recent releases such as A Mighty Heart, Blades of Glory, and Hostel: Part II (Unrated Version), as well as classic such as the Star Trek franchise.

While VUDU's standard definition content is already optimized for HD televisions, films encoded in High Definition (HD) deliver an even sharper viewing experience with six times higher resolution than standard definition encoded films. HD content also highlights key benefits of VUDU's video on-demand service. Because the box is always connected to the Internet, VUDU continually updates the quality and quantity of the content available to customers.

The HD titles complement the over 5,000 standard definition movies and TV shows currently available from all the major U.S. film studios and more than 22 independent and international film distributors.

    About VUDU

I searched NETFLIX.COM for HD Star Trek movies - they have 0 in Blu-Ray and 0 in HD-DVD. I searched for retailers selling Star Trek movies in Blu-Ray or HD-DVD and found none. If you want to watch the Star Trek movies in HD, it looks like you better own a Vudu.

Does that mean that all 70 HD movies will be rentable by the end of January? It seems to say that but I'm just checking. That would be cool.

I am reading it the same way you are.

That would be awesome if all the new HD titles are available for both rent and to purchase by the end of January!

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come on all movies??

I'm not sure you'll see a "purchase" option for all of the HD titles coming out this month, some studios have not yet bought into the concept of allowing Vudu to offer this. What I do think is a sign of things to come is HD content exclusively available to Vudu customers. This announcement demonstrates that some studios see the wisdom of climbing above the format war over yesterday's media. Vudu makes it economically viable to deliver HD without the overhead of producing discs destined for the landfill. Heck, Vudu should be declared "green" - maybel we can get Al Gore to back it as a way to head off global warming! We could get carbon credits for renting on Vudu.

P.S. For those out there who take me too seriously some days, the Al Gore green comment is a joke.

P.P.S. I also wish every movie had both rental and purchase options, but it's not going to happen overnight.

I expect there will be HD movies available on Vudu that will never be available on BluRay or HD-DVd...

$5.99 is kind of steep. Whats the deal? I would expect HD rental prices to be the same as HD.

It seems reasonable to me, given that it is HD and relative to SD rental fees. I'm sure the studios charge more for the content.

It's because it's HD and they can. HD rentals on PayPer View are more than the same movies in SD...

It's all supply and demand. People will want a better picture and will pay to get it.

Why do people pay $8.50 to see the movie in a smelly, dirty building with a lot of strangers?

Comcast HD VOD is $5.99. Seems fair for Vudu to charge the same.

Never had an urge to pay more than $20 a month for basic cable, so Ive never used VOD. I guess if thats the going rate then thats the going rate. Kind of a shock at first though, I expected HD to be the same.

I never paid more than $500 for a new TV before HD came out either . Times have changed.
