Bill Gates comment about video downloads

Warner Brothers said last week it was backing Blu-ray exclusively. Will Microsoft remain committed to the HD DVD format even if it appears that the media companies are backing Blu-ray?

Certainly we supported both Blu-ray and HD DVD as Windows peripherals. The last announcement was Paramount opting for HD DVD and now this one is going the other way. I still think a format battle is going on there. Our contribution is the HDi Interactive format piece has been really well received. We hope to see that used broadly. I think the real competitor in the long run is digital (video) download. Just like in music, it is going to be the biggest of the three.

And poor Billy-Bob. Vudu didn't choose his format but a standard - H.264...

Well, he got that right. Digital download IS the future.

      Solid state media is done.
I could be suave, but how many crude guys do you know?

Oh and it goes further. On Demand is the viewing technology of tomorrow. In ten years, I truly believe that broadcast schedules will be a thing of the past. If the consumer can watch shows when they want, who cares about a network schedule? And the most incredible thing about it is that there is no more need for Nielsen ratings! With an on demand solution, it can be known very easily what shows or movies have been watched in a given month and how many watchings each one has had. No more sampling the population and applying statistics.

Everything that you guys are saying is the exact reason why the WGA is striking right now.. Problem is, the studios are going to fight like hell and screw the whole thing up again, at least for a few years.. Just like Music biz did when Kazaa was big.. It took the ipod and itunes to make the downloadable music thing work.. Torrents are going to be the go to for another few years for big name studio pics early, and majority of tv shows.. sucks but they are going to have to get bit on the bottom line by illegal downloads before they realize they need to make a paradigm shift in the market..

And now they are screwing it up again! Some online stores have DRM free music. Some don't. Some carry some artists. Others don't. It's turning into a hodge podge again and that's what got them in trouble in the first place!

I think we are 2-3 years away from wide availability of video downloads with less restrictions (e.g. better terms for rentals). It took music business how many years before all 4 major studios went DRM-free? And notice how they all went to Amazon to spite Apple & iTunes.

Right - which is why it's a mess again. If you are going to implement a policy - implement it at all layers and all outlets. So if you remove DRM from your online music, why should not every online music outlet get to offer that DRM free content.

Unless policies like this for both music and video are applied uniformly across the market, the consumer base won't flock to it.
