So now that Vudu has instant HD, let's ask the question again:
IS VUDU LIVING UP TO YOUR EXPECTATIONS?

Re: Is VUDU LIVING UP to your EXPECTATIONS?

I'm really happy. Just keep the rental content flowing (with DD5.1).

I think the $5.99 sticker price for HD titles needs to be $4.99 to be competitive. But I'm not worried, I think Vudu will eventually figure that out on there own.

I don't really need "instant" viewing, but I'm still impressed with how well it works. However, if push comes to shove, I will always pick quality over expediency.

          Regards

I think things like the instant playback and expediency are part of the overally quality of the experience.

Yea, i guess I agree with that to a degree.

But to make my point by extreme example, would you rather watch a movie instantly in black & white, or wait 10 minutes to see it in color? Hope you get my meaning.

              Regards

I do but my point is that I think Vudu is an enjoyable high def experience today and it does it with instant playback capabilities. The difference between Vudu HD and Blu Ray isn't as profound as the difference between black and white and color. I know there are tradeoffs with level of compression, etc. but I really think they have hit the sweet spot concerning tradeoffs, functionality, picture and audio quality and convenience. I wouldn't want to give up anything about the way Vudu does things today for a small improvement in picture quality, for instance.

I thought about it some more and maybe have another way to put it.

I'm slow and it took me awhile to understand that compression and performance doesn't come without a price to quality.

Now there is the concept of "lossless" compression with audio.

My goal would be to someday see good compression and performance with "lossless" video & audio quality.

                  Regards

I think it's a lot harder with video because there is just so much more information. It is more likely we will see increases in bandwidth and can therefore stream larger files with less compression artifacts.

I believe that my dream goal from my previous post would make us both happy.

Or there's always the possibility of newer and better compression algorithims. Just look at the amazing things that are now being done over twisted pair copper phone lines.

You type faster than I can think!

Re: Is VUDU LIVING UP to your EXPECTATIONS?

I think lossless video compression is almost impossible - but the file sizes would be HUGE. Uncompressed SD video is something like 15 GB for 45 minutes. My digital camcorder records uncompressed and if I pull down a whole hour of video from a tape, the resulting file size is HUGE. And that's 480i video. 1080p uncompressed would be enormous.

I've still not figured out how they do lossless audio compression. The whole idea in compression is just that - to compress - to remove volume. And while you can compress a milk jug 'cause it's mostly air, you still get "loss" as the milk jug never comes back to the same exact shape.

Back in 1988 I worked for two months in Japan for KDD, the international telephone company. I worked on compression algorithms for sending images over packet switched networks. It was all about how we could remove bits from the file as efficient as possible w/o losing the quality of the picture. But we always removed bits. We've come a long way since then and there's people smarter than a college student who had never done image processing before working on this stuff. But I still can't get my hands around how you could do it as "lossless."

Yes I can just see FLAC for Video. You only need 50 teraflops to decompress...

My impression from the way-over-my-head discussions I've scanned about lossless compression is that when any part of the screen does not move or change from one frame to another, the codec can specify to repeat the last value or something for bits 1002392-1004923, as a highly inaccurate but useful example. In 1/24 of a second, it would be rare for the whole screen to change. (Not to mention it would give you a heck of a headache!) Now that can only get you so far, so slightly lossy compression can save you a LOT more space.

I would really hate to use a Star Trek transporter in your world.

They would have to say "Beam some of me up Scotty".
