    Another VUDU HD competitor?

I just saw this one on Wired:

Interesting. At least they have some content. XtremeHD actually had a major press conference where they announced all sorts of nice features but managed to downplay the fact they had not signed any deals for content.

Yea, that VideoGiants service doesn't sound all that great.

But "Building B" (link below) sounds interesting...may actually be more of a complement to Vudu than a competitor...

OK, I have to buy a hard drive and get it in the mail with my movies and then plug it in? Sounds like the Netflix model gone high tech.

Or, I just relax and watch it all on my Vudu streamed in.

          I'll take the second...

The XStreamHD hardware looks good, but I'm really not down with having to put a satellite up on my roof.

It's still not On Demand though. That's the biggest problem. It's a similar concept to Movie Beam where the movies have to be preloaded based on my selections or on my preferences, viewing habits, or whatever. What if I want a movie that is completely outside my viewing habits? I still have to wait.

And I have to have more hardware installed at my house, etc. High speed net access is getting cheaper and cheaper all the time and will continue to do so.

Yeah, I dont like the concept of having only preloaded selections available either. But even a company like this could realize the mistake its making and add an ethernet port to allow VOD in the future. Either way, I don't really see people buying into a preloaded device, but then again as with most companies... they evolve and may enter the VOD business, who knows.

What I do like about it is the ATSC tuners, the DVR capability and the ability to stream content to multiple devices around the home.

I don't think Vudu needs to add tuners or DVRs to their product offering. But adding a product with the ability to play media stored on a server somewhere along with being able to stream to multiple devices around the home would be a huge win for having a "mega" media device.

Although, if you had a device that did everything exceptionally well, it could be a huge win for the one who can figure out how to offer it. Most people like myself have a ton of boxes under or around our entertainment centers, and the thought of adding one more is always a concern.

Eventually, VUDU will hit a point where it has perfected VOD and may even be the premier VOD device, but at some point there may come a time where they need to consider "what's next", if they dont want to become stagnant and that what next may be to take over the market share used by people like TiVO. Which means adding tuners and DVRs, etc...which I don't see as a bad thing to evolve into, but yet an opportunity to steal more market share in the home media consumer market. Afterall people like me are trying to figure out how to get rid of the extra boxes under our entertainment centers, not add more.

content notwithstanding - this IS the category killer!! http://blog.wired.com/gadgets/2008/0...-brings-t.html

....The box sits near your television, where it must be connected with wired ethernet, and costs nothing. $10 per month gets you access to the full FyreTV catalog, currently comprised of about 20,000 titles from Wicked Entertainment and other studios...

Looks like they may value their content/IP a little bit less than the Hollywood studios. Maybe they have lower production costs/values.... They certainly value it a whole lot more than I do, I'll pass on this one. Thanks anyway, I look forward to hearing if their support forum has as many gripes about requiring a wired ethernet port!
