Next evolution in wireless theather solutions

Almost everyone who's into home theater loves surround sound, but even the staunchest audiophiles have to admit that the inevitable result--a room full of criss-crossing speaker cables--sours the deal. Just about every manufacturer is on a quest to kill the wires, but the solutions so far have had drawbacks--single speaker surround-sound systems just doesn't sound as good as a full 5.1 system; wireless rear speakers usually still have wires, exhibit an audible hiss or compression artifacts, and/or often use the interference-prone 2.4GHz wireless spectrum. Neosonik's solution avoids most of these pitfalls by using an AV controller (to which you plug in your sources) that wirelessly distributes the audio to all of the speakers, each of which contains a built-in amplifier and a wireless receiver. The wireless speakers need to be plugged into a power outlet, but the whole system looks a whole lot nicer than a standard wired installations.

Neosonik transmits its data in the 5Ghz spectrum, but does not use the same technology as traditional Wi-Fi. The proprietary wireless audio transmission technology is called as Airpower AV, which is tweaked to improve reliability and latency (Neosonik claims a very impressive 6 nanoseconds delay). In the future, Neosonik intends to license the Airpower technology to other manufacturers, with the idea that any Airpower-equipped device could be seamlessly integrated into your existed Airpower system.

Would love to see VUDU license this technology from Neosonik. Although, the product they offer is way over priced for what you get. Supposedly, it works with HDMI video as well.

Re: Next evolution in wireless theather solutions

I ran all my A/V wires inside the walls and attic, and I am using speakers mounted inside the wall. there are only 2 visible cables in my relatively complicated system - the digital coaxial cable and ac power cable to the subwoofer that my wife decided to move to a "better looking" location. Those will go away soon when I get around to fishing another power outlet to go behind the sub. At my last house I was able to hide the subwoofer inside a wall also, so she couldn't think of it as a piece of furniture to relocate/decorate.

It's very possible to get rid of the clutter - it just takes some focus and dedication to the goal. I have an extreme distrust of all things wireless, and too many years of success with good old "hard wired" solutions.

It's nice to see all the wireless tech coming out (video and audio), but I'd think this is a niche solution because it requires each speaker to be plugged into a power outlet.

I also noticed that the article disses surround bars. While most of them ARE not good 5.1 replacement, Yamaha's YSP line is very highly regarded and also has built-in A/V receiver.

Something we agree on! Wired all the way.
Much easier to do when you have the house built and you can plan everything out and run the cables before the drywall is installed.

I do have a wireless router for my laptop, but that's the only use I have for wireless in my house.

That is the reason I got my YSP-4000 in the first place. It is a AV reciever, has excptional sound quality. If your room meets the requirments of the sound bar you don't need cables all over the place.

I'm a huge fan or just rolling up the sleeves (or opening up the wallet if the sight of you with tools scares your wife) and doing what is necessary to hide all the wires.

However, I DO think that these new wireless solutions are probably very welcome to apartment dwellers in larger cities where it's not worth the cost of hiding the wires.

Personally, I hate running 20 million wires behind my system and with so many devices, it is a pain. Not to mention, if you move, having to rewire everything is tedious. Afterall, it would be much easier to just plug and play your gear, then to have to run new wires everytime you get a new device or replace one. Eventually I see all device becoming wireless, at some point.

Well at least HDMi makes it much easier. One cable for audio and video. Although I still have around 16 HDMI cables I'm using in my main setup. Plus another 8 HDMI cables with my two other HD sets.

I didn't say I thoroughly ENJOYED pushing all my wires around!

I do agree with you - I think everything will eventually be wireless (or at least have the capability).

I used to have more when I had a couple of matrix HDMI splitters. But I still have a couple of HDMi switches and HDMI splitters plus mY HDTiVos, PS3, Xbox 360, HD DVD players, VP50pro, FIOS HD STB, OPPO SACD/DVDA player, Denon 3806, Algolith HDMI FLEA etc.
I'm hoping the VUDU will be a nice addition if I can find one for the right price.

Well - just to ensure that we stay sufficiently off-topic, while I've got the interest of several people who appear to know what they're doing...

I have a 50-inch Pioneer Elite plasma. It has 2 HDMI connections on the back and an optical audio output. I thought that I shoudl be able to run HDMI from my HD DirecTV DVR and the Vudu and then run ONE optical cable back out to my receiver. I'd then use my Harmony remote to take care of the various audio/video switchinng on the TV and Receiver.

But I don't get any audio output when I do this. What's up? That' supposed to work right??

PS - this is not just a Vudu issue. I'm thinking that my TV might be defective. And I've checked the settings on the TV as well.

The optical output on HDTV sets is typically only for the audio output of the internal ATSC/QAM tuner.

Well that explains it. So to take advantage of eliminating cables I will need to upgrade my receiver to one that has HDMI inputs correct?

Hmmm... sounds like enough of a reason to start shopping!
