Netflix to offer unlimited downloads of rentals to subscribers

Looks like Netflix is opening up a limited selection of their library for online viewing. This is the sort of pricing model I'm dying to see from Vudu. Let me pay a monthly subscription fee for unlimited access to the content library, and I guarantee I'll pay more on an annual basis than I would paying a la carte (where I have to make a decision each time I rent whether or not the movie is worth 3 or 4 dollars to watch).

Well - I basically agree with you but right now I'm sort of on the fence on this topic.

If the database were much more robust (say like 10,000+ titles) and everything were available to rent (at a minimum - I could care less, for the most part, about purchasing titles) and I was given the choice for a flat fee or pay per view then I'd have troubel deciding.

My wife and I probably watch 2-3 movies per month. But my KIDS on the other hand watch tons of movies (unfortunately the SAME ones over, and over, and OVER again).

I'd PROBABLY go for the subscription-based pricing as long as it's reasonable. But we should all keep in mind that it's difficul to compare the $10/month fees for Blockbuster and Netflix mail order service b/c there is no instant gratification so there's some limitation on the maximum content you can obtain in any given month. With Vudu you could go ape **** if you wanted so I would expect the fee to be something north of $10/month.

Not sure what the right mix is but as long as there's an option for pay per view AND subscription-based pricing then I think you've got a winner.

With subscription based pricing, i'd watch a lot more movies, but I'd also likely not finish as many. If the movie isn't that good, I'd give up on movies a bit sooner without feeling guilty about spending the money.

Good point - I agree. Especially with the kids. I'm not going to rent a movie for them right now b/c most of the time they won't watch the whole thing (they're 3 and 2 so you can probabyl understand).

But if I had subscription based pricing then this would be awesome - I could just let them watch any part of whatever movie they wanted (with proper parental control settings obviously).

I would prefer to just purchase the kids movies we want outright. But alas, with the Disney films, they are all rental only...

My kids are 3 1/2 and 20 months. So I understand your pain.

I agree. If I could purchase all the Disney films then the problem would be mostly solved. But I've already got a solid solution in place for that - I'm running XBMC to stream my DVD library to my living room. Works great. I'm even working on putting a similar system in my wife's car...

            Kids these days are spoiled!!

I'm proud of my little boy though - he hopped up on the coffee table this weekend to show his big sister his latest discovery. He figured out that if he (and I'll use the politically correct term here) passed gas while sitting up there that it would reverberate quite nicely throughout the living room.

OK - we're officially WAY off topic here.

I have 2 girls so that's not quite the problem I have!

Most of the DVDs we have, I've ripped and either put on my iPod/AppleTV or onto my NFS for sharing via my Photobridge. Works pretty well. Except today they had a problem and while I got the video playing remotely from my office (VPNs, Slingboxes and telnet are great), something was Fubar with the sound. Purchase on Vudu would be cleaner for content we don't own already. Although my wife's aunt gave us nearly every Disney film there is last summer. Problem is most are on VHS!

What the heck is VHS? Is it some newfangled technology (Very High end Stuff)?

I have a feeling that since Disney is very closely linked with Apple, they are not being very cooperative with Vudu. On the other hand, companies like Universal that are anti-Apple, will be more receptive to Vudu (in theory).

Well there definately could be a conflict of interest with Disney supporting iTunes, afterall how can Jobs really take on the difficult task of representing two separate sets of shareholders whose interests may not always be identical.

Well, all Disney titles are rent only. Jobs doesn't have a majority stake in Disney. He's just the single largest shareholder. I was surprised when a Pixar movie, Ratatouille, showed up on Vudu but it is there. I think Disney is just more interested in the fact that most of their movies are kids movies. Kids watch movies over and over and over and over. So they can charge one price and let me watch it ad infinitum or they can make me pay $2.99 or $3.99 each and every time my kid wants to watch "Piglets Big Movie" or whatever....They make more money that way.

Living in Florida for 6 years has taught me that the House of Mouse will not let politics get in the way of profit. If there's a buck to be made, Disney's gonna have their hands in the pot.
