    conversion at Walmart

I see this new option was recently announced where you can get a digital copy of your dvd or blu ray added to your Vudu account for a small fee.

Sounds interesting but I have a question.

If its a blu ray and I pay the $2 fee, is the movie going to be in HDX quality.

-If you own the movie in Blu-Ray, it's a normal $2 charge to convert.
-If you have a DVD and want to upgrade, it's $5

You can watch the press conference here if you have any questions.

thanks for the reply. And will that be in HDX?. If its just HD it wouldnt be enough to justify for me.

And another questions popped in my mind. If the title is on a participating studio but not currently in the Vudu library will it be possible to add it?

            DVD to SD is $2

            Blu-Ray to HDX is $2

            DVD to HDX is $5

-If VUDU does not have the movie available in our library, the title will not be eligible for conversion.

If I want to "convert" a Blu-Ray title to HDX, but that title is only available for "normal purchase" in SD - then I can't do that, right? In other words, you can only convert a title to the max quality currently available for purchase, correct?

This is good to know. Some sites have been reporting that the cost will be $5 if you have a BD. At $2 each i will be converting some of my BD titles. But at $5 each, I would not do any of my BDs. I dumped my DVDs many years ago so I don't have that option.

                    dhatman, couple questions:

                    1. Why are the 3 'Blade' movies only available for purchase in SD when rental verions are available in SD, HD and HDX? Why can't it be purchased in HDX?

                    2. If 'Blade' purchase is only available in SD what copy will be offered in Disc To Digital conversion from DVD? Blade is not available in Blu-ray.

                    Thanks.

                      Re: conversion at Walmart

I can answer your first question. It's because of the licensing agreement between vudu and the studios.

This is going to be a good service and although I don't plan on buying many, I will certainly buy a few HDX versions of DVDs I own.

These types of questions will have to be answered in order for this service to fly, IMO...Since the goal of the studio partners is to increase OWNERSHIP of movies, not rentals, they will have to open up things to allow VUDU to offer every title they have in every format VUDU offers.......I.E., I would convert my Lord of the Rings Extended Version DVD's in a heartbeat to HDX digital, but they are only available in SD at the moment.....

Cloud is nice, but download is better.....down the road, that may be offered as well, with Ultraviolet's CFF format.....Not everyone has a high-speed connection to stream, and the powers that be in the Ultraviolet consortium already know this if they have really thought this service through.....

One of the execs, I believe from Warner, said his first conversion will be the Matrix...well that film is not in any HD format for purchase on VUDU....hopefully when the service officially rolls out the studios will make all of their titles available in all VUDU formats......This is only another step in the evolution of Ultraviolet, one that on a limited basis, I will take advantage of....

If the studios do this right, it will render the current ripping, encoding, etc., and software for doing these things moot......I am waiting for the Ultraviolet CFF(Common File Format) to be deployed with UV capable devices, since UV will be compatible with DLNA devices, my ultimate wish is the ability to download my purchased movies to my DLNA-compatible NAS to feed my cinema, It also supports TrueHD and DTS-MA audio, another good thing......On a cautionary note, never forget, the ECONOMY will have a lot to say about this project going forward.....

Any chance we can just purchase this option when we buy a BR at checkout? I would love to pay $2 for VUDU access and forgo the awful digital version that comes in the box. Also, any plans for this to be an option at Sam's Club? I don't shop at Wal-mart all that often but I'm always at Sam's.

                              Re: conversion at Walmart

I myself will only be converting current SD disks to Digital and only if I can upgrade to HD quality. I have a couple of questions/clarifications:

                              1. If they are not available on Vudu, then obviously you can't convert to digital.
                              2. If they ARE available on Vudu but NOT one of the 5 studios, then you can't convert to digital.
                              3. If they ARE available through Vudu (but are listed as only available to WATCH in SD) and ARE one of the studios participating, can you convert to HD quality?
                              4. If they ARE available through Vudu (but are listed as only available to OWN in SD) and ARE one of the studios participating, can you convert to HD quality?
