Three key questions for Disc to Digital

I am considering moving my entire library to Vudu when the Disc to Digital service becomes available. My goal is simple - have all my movies in one place that is easy to use and access. In order to achieve this, I have three questions that I'm hoping someone can answer:

    1) Library - A lot of movies are not on Vudu, or are only available for purchase in SD even though the BD version is out. Movies not on Vudu include things like The English Patient and Star Wars, examples that are critical to my movie library. If a movie is not on Vudu, will they expand the library to cover all of the movies under the participating studios? If not, will they still entitle a disc for playback on Vudu even though it may not be for sale on Vudu?

    2) Organization - Right now, the My Vudu library only filters by TV and Movies. There is no sorting, and it appears the movies are listed first in, first out. This is fine if you have 10-20 movies, but not if you have 300+. Will a filtering and sorting option be available, similar to the 'Browse' filter? If not, I do not believe a large library is viable to manage in Vudu.

    3) Ultraviolet - I'm confused about how Vudu will support Ultraviolet. Can you watch movies purchased on other Ultraviolet-compatible services on Vudu? And vice versa? Can you enter a code for a Ultraviolet BD and get the digital version for free? I have not seen much detail here, so just need some clarification.

If anyone has insight here, it would be greatly appreciated. The answers to these questions will determine the approach I take for centralized media at my new house that I'm moving into in a couple of months.

I hope I can offer some insight...

    1) I am in total agreement with you on these points, I guess they will be answered by the time the rollout begins....

    2) I have 325 movies on VUDU, in addition to movies on my media server..I do not have an issue with scrolling though my films, but your suggestion is very valid and would make it easier.....Another consideration is you internet connection and possible outages, bandwidth caps, etc...Hopefully, downloading will be allowed to help remedy this....

    3) The way I understand it is eventually the Ultraviolet digital locker will be the place one can store their films, no matter where they bought them, whether disc or digital...Check out this link: http://uvdemystified.com/uvfaq.html.....It may answer at lot of questions you have, maybe not VUDU-specific, but it gives insight about UV......

Another question: a customer has a Blu-ray but the movie is only available in SD, so the customer pays $2 to access the SD version. When the HD/HDX versions become available, will there be an additional charge to access them? Will the customer have to bring the disc back again?

Would anyone with the BD actually pay to only get the SD version?

You might if it was the only version available on Ultraviolet and you wanted to switch over completely from discs to streaming.

I read that Vudu will be able to play non-Vudu UV movies (like UV copies you got from discs) and other UV apps like Flixster will be able to play Vudu UV movies. Some unanswered questions like will Vudu only be able to play UV movies already in its library? Will they be SD/HD/HDX? Vudu said they would give more details as the D2D start date approaches.

            We'll see.

I wouldn't do disc to digital if I only watched my movies in one location. That's where my Blu Ray discs are anyway. Disc to digital is about the ability to watch movies wherever you can stream them - the airport, a friend's house, your smartphone, etc.

Repeating it doesn't necessarily make it so. Some of us simply don't want to have to find and insert and re-shelve discs when we're watching at home. Especially with more than one television, but even with just one, it's much more convenient to be able to select the item from a menu instead of having to worry about handling and possibly damaging physical media.

I'm not saying my concern is or should be the only one. Why do you feel the need to keep doing so?

More power to you. You said what you would do. I said what I would do. I don't see a problem. I see people having a discussion.

As far as number 3, yes any movie you have on Ultraviolet will be available on Vudu and any movie you match with Disc to Digital on Vudu will be available to other Ultraviolet services like Flixster and eventually Xbox Live, Sony Entertainment Network, Amazon, etc when those services become Ultraviolet enabled. Any movie you register to your Ultraviolet account, regardless of the source, should be available on any Ultraviolet playback service. The only exception I can think of is if a particular studio will not allow playback of their Ultraviolet movies on a certain service. For example, right now Paramount movies will not play back on Flixster, despite the fact that Warner, Sony, and Universal do. This really irks me and I hope they fix it soon. Walmart did confirm that ANY of the 5 participating studios content will be available to playback from Vudu.

+1 on Max's post.....Disc to Digital for me is about buying an HDX version of a DVD I own for 5 bucks and playing it in my home cinema in the finest video and sound VUDU offers.....

I'll agree with that. For some reason at the time, I had it stuck in my head it was Blu Rays being converted, not DVDs, even thoughg I knew you could do either.

Yeah, can you imagine my being able to upgrade my DVD versions of Star Wars, Indiana Jones, Lord of the Rings, etc to HDX Digital( trademarked that name, LOL) for 5 bucks each? Hope it happens, that is why I did not buy the Blu-Ray versions of these films, I had a feeling something was going to happen in the digital space........

The problem is that right now, Star Wars and Indiana Jones movies are not even on Vudu, and LOTR is only in SD for purchase. If that magically changes on April 16, great - but I wouldn't hold your breath.

well, I said the same thing about the Jurassic Park trilogy, and now VUDU has it......If the studios don't open it up, guess what, I don't lose a thing.....
