That really doesn't matter at all since they're nearly the same aspect ratio. It's open matte anyway, not even a crop job.

Well, if you look at it that way you can just think of an open matte release as getting more of the original film delivered to theaters so you get to do your own matting at home with a projector

Then I guess there's nothing to complain about if they open up a 2.35 movie to 1.78 then huh? Where does it stop?

Also, as far as overscan goes, you guys did notice that Vudu does have an overscan adjustment setting (I applaud Vudu for that) so that point at should be a non-issue.

Actually I was referring to home front projection systems as not having any overscan (or maybe I'm misunderstanding your post ).

Sure you (and I) can complain about 2.35 opened to 1.78. It usually distorts or destroys the director/cinematographer's artistic framing/visual story telling.

Also do VUDU Apps have the overscan adjustment in them? I remember seeing it in my VUDU box but not on my LG BD player.

Some HDTV's do have overscan adjustments in the menu system.

Theater prints usually include the open matte content in a 35mm 4:3 frame and the projector mattes it to 1.85:1 or 2.35:1 (w/ anamorphic lens). I was just making a bad joke that this way you can be more authentic and matte it with your projector

In truth, of course, we ask the original aspect ratio for all content if it's available.

The VUDU app has overscan adjustment on some, but not all platforms - it depends on whether (as you said) there is already a built in adjustment and whether the hardware/drivers support it.

If you want to adjust overscan go to My Vudu/Info & Settings. You'll find it there.

Re: Ultraviolet movies not shown in original aspect ratio?

I would hope Vudu indicates with a disclaimer all movies that are not original theatrical aspect ratio although I will guess that is difficult to do. All of my HDTVs do show slight black bars on the 1.85:1 films, including the home theater projector. I don't really care about the 1.85:1 change to 1.78:1 but if some want to complain about that as well, I understand.

The best solution for Vudu is to use OAR whenever possible and when it isn't, offer the film anyway with an easy to notice disclaimer so as a user I can decide whether to rent the movie despite that shortcoming. Including OAR specifics would be helpful since I will rent the 1.85:1 but not the 2.35:1 films adjusted to 1.78:1.

                  Got it: AKA soft matte

I have 0% overscan on my system.

I'll look tonight for kicks but I don't think it's available on my VUDU App.
