Re: FORREST GUMP UPGRADE TO HDX?

This type of problem has been on my mind for movies that we take in that are on DVD (but still widescreen) and just choose the SD ver, and the term SD and how its used so loosely.
Does SD mean just the quality at which it streams or are we getting a Full screen copy of a wide screen movie?

I ask because I just took in The Mask of Zorro on DVD and when I got home to watch it, it looked like the description of a poster early on in this thread: ....if your seeing black bars all the way around that is windoboxing.
      Is this what we get?

In general "SD" just means it's encoded 720x480. That's the number of "pixels" in the picture, but the actual aspect ratio you see can get complicated...

Most recent SD movies (when you see "Enhanced Widescreen") are encoded with non-square pixels (this is called "anamorphic widescreen"), so when it's actually displayed on your TV the pixels are stretched horizontally to result in a 16x9 picture. This is actually the same way most widescreen DVDs work.

The other way to encode widescreen is to encode with the top and bottom bars (letterboxing) in the content and then zoom the video in so the bars are not shown (in the VUDU UI this shows up as "Widescreen").

It gets even more complicated when the movie is 2.35:1 ("35mm anamorphic") - in which case for SD it usually ends up as anamorphic widescreen with additional letterboxing.

It looks like for The Mask of Zorro is was encoded with black bars but we don't have it marked as widescreen, so it's showing as full screen (ie. "windowboxed" - so you see the horizontal and vertical bars). I'll go and mark this as widescreen so our app will automatically zoom it in. (you can probably also zoom it manually with your TV to make it look right if you find any others that are not marked correctly...)

I watch Vudu movies from my Sony Blu Ray disc player. I had to adjust the screen settings through the Blu Ray player to 4:3 instead of 16:9 for The Mask of Zorro to present in widescreen. It actually looks pretty good, even though it's standard def. I haven't added the movie to my collection, just tested it using the 2 minute preview on Vudu. Which by the way ydkjman is a great way to view the screen format of a movie you may want to add to your D2D collection. After the issue with Forrest Gump, I preview all movies through Vudu's 2 minute preview before I add them to my list. Forrest Gump is still showing up in pan scan. Nothing I do through my Blu Ray screen settings or TV changes the picture. I've only seen a few movies with these issues. 99 percent of my collection looks awesome!

Re: FORREST GUMP UPGRADE TO HDX?

Lethal Weapon 1 has a problem along these lines as there are bars at the top and bottom on the VUDU version that shouldn't be there. The movie is true 16x9 aspect ratio. I sent a screenshot comparison of the bluray and the VUDU version to VUDU tech support and it got bumped to second level. Haven't heard back yet but you may want to consider doing this so they know there was a problem with the encode. Thus far, this is the only movie I have that's done this.

I looked at this movie and I believe technically it's correct... it's 1:85:1 (16:9 is 1.77:1). Usually 1.85:1 movies get cropped to 16:9 because (unlike 2.39:1) minimal picture is lost, and many people don't like to see black bars.

But there are also people (many on these forums ) who really prefer to see exactly what was filmed rather than cropping to fit 16:9 TVs...

Thanks for your reply. It's not just that there are black bars on the top and bottom, the people actually look squished, ie fatter. If the aspect ratio was from the original film, that's ok but the picture itself on the VUDU version is distorted. This appears on both the VUDU HDX and SD versions. Oddly, the Flixster version looks fine and is 16x9. I have the DVD and Bluray version and they are 16x9 as well. It's only the VUDU versions that have this problem.

I looked at it again and you're right, the picture does look a bit squashed vertically. I'll file a bug with the content team.

I think the SD version of Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery has the same issue.

Two bugs have been filed with the content team regarding Forrest Gump. One from you and one from dhatman. Forrest Gump still not fixed. It's not an HDX version of the movie but that's what I paid for. Going on two months.

They might have to go back to the Studio for a fix. That's what they said they needed to do for my HDX movie "Peaceful Warrior" and who knows how long that will take. I've asked for an estimate and Vudu is completely silent on any estimates.

Thanks for the input lu. When I added Forrest Gump it was advertised as HDX and it's not. As far as I know it is still being advertised as HDX. AND the movie showed up on the D2D movie list I printed as HDX and charged me 5.00. So I feel they should take the movie out of my movie list and give me a 5.00 credit. I didn't get what was advertised or what I paid for. I could use the 5.00 credit towards buying another movie.

I agree Sandra! This is one of the reasons a lot of Home Theater buffs aren't adopting UV! They don't trust it just yet. I really hope they fix these problems.

On the Paramount Pictures website, it says the UV is available in 16x9 widescreen, and in high definition. Please ask again for a new stream.
