Thank you. I think I'll stop buying HDX until that happens (and not just the promise of it happening).

I'll Google that. I'm glad to know that, and I definitely will find out more about that.

The movie studios should learn from the music studios.

This one letter from Steve Jobs completely changed the world of digital music purchases. The movie studios need to read it too:

        Thanks.

Then I'll buy SD copies sometime after August 28th. It's still pointless for me to buy HDX copies (because they are SD on my PC).

Does anyone know the difference between Dolby Digital Stereo (Fellowship and Two Towers) and Dolby Digital Plus Stereo (RoTK)?

I just Googled it and still don't know. I'm guessing the difference is marketing (kind of like the only reason to buy Bose is that they spend more on advertising). However I would like to point out that both are Stereo, and not any form of Surround Sound (5.1, 5.1ES, 6.1, 7.1, etc.) To me, if they are stereo, and not surround sound, that's the only detail I need to know.

            EDIT:
            source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Dolby_Digital
Dolby Digtal Plus uses AC-3 encoding. Dolby Digital does not have to use AC-3 encoding.
When a quality codec (say MP3 or better) is used and all other encoding factors are the same (stereo, same constant/variable at same bitrate, same sampling frequency, etc.) I cannot tell the difference between AC-3 encoded audio and MP3 audio. Both are lossy compression (as opposed to a codec like FLAC, which is lossless).
Apple, which sells music in its iTunes store that uses AC-3 encoding claims that it sounds better than MP3 (MPEG-1 or MPEG-2, Audio Layer III) at the same bitrate, but I can't hear the difference.
Dolby Digital Stereo and Dolby Digital Plus Stereo are both Stereo.

I hope the Digital Copy/iTunes codes that expired on Jun 26 2012 works for these LOTR movies. That would be awesome.

I'm really confused by this statement. I've been reading articles on UltraViolet Common File Format.

It seems to me like they are already using it. I CAN download my movies though Flixster (in SD), and the only way they would be able to deliver them in an UltraViolet compatible format would be UltraViolet Common File Format.

In theory, if I moved or copied my files from this computer to another computer linked to my UltraViolet account, it would play on that other computer. That's what Common File Format is.

So, if I understand correctly, Common File Format is already in use, and I'm still limited to my SD copies.

Are you saying that UltraViolet, or Flixster, or Vudu has plans to let us download our HD copies?

                Edit:
OK. So I logged into uvvu.com with my UltraViolet account. If I go to "Our Collection" and look at my UV movies, to the right of each one, there is a disabled button that says "Get a Copy". If you mouse over that button, it says "Available Dec 20."

Is that when I'll be able to download my HD/HDX copies?

WTH? If I mouse over "Get a copy" for Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix, it says, "Available Jun 21!" Do they mean June 21, 2013?!?!

The "Get a Copy" is how (or at least one way) to download a CFF for your movies when its available. The dates under the button are all wrong (movies from Flixster have always said "Dec 20" since UV launched, Universal has different date, others say coming soon or something).

Flixster Collections is only app that currently downloads UV movies as single file (and maybe the Flixster mobile app) and those aren't CFF files. Just a temporary replacement so people can download something for offline use until CFF comes out. When CFF is live, you'll be able to register all your supported devices to your UV account, and download/copy your CFF to your registered devices and be able to play them.

PLEASE IGNORE THIS POST. I WAS WRONG!

Thanks for the info. In order to un-hijack this thread, I thought I'd post some current and relevant info both on and off topic:

                    Improvements since my post:
                    1. Some movies that I purchased via D2D are now available for HD/HDX computer streaming and/or download through Vudu (use Vudu To Go to download to your Windows PC - haven't check if this is true for Mac or Linux).
                    2. I have discovered a page on flixster.com with relevant information on if a title is available for HD/HDX streaming/download (through Vudu and other providers)!

Based on personal experience, I believe the following to be currently true. I certainly haven't tested every movie to verify if it is true or not:

To tell if a movie that Voodoo D2D says is available can be downloaded via Vudu To Go (for Windows) or streamed in HD/HDX via web browser:
                    1. Verify the title is available for the D2D service via the Disc To Digital page on vudu.com. Example: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition) is available according to vudu.com.
                    2. Verify that HDX is a purchase option with the D2D service. Example: The Lord of the Rings: The Fellowship of the Ring (Extended Edition) is available in HDX according to vudu.com.
                    3. Go to this page on flixster.com: http://www.flixster.com/search/
                    4. In the search box on the Flixster search page, type the name of the title you wish to verify. Be as specific as possible (like typing the word extended for a LOTR title to search for the extended edition). Example: type lord extended in the search box, and select which LOTR movie you wish to check in the drop down preview (directly below and attached to the search box). Mobile users may need to type the entire title name, as sometimes it is difficult to select "preview" type search results on mobile devices.
                    5. This is the most important step, and it holds true for my movies, but may or may not be true for all titles. On the resulting page for the title you selected look in the right-hand column. You want the box labeled Also available on. Check to see if Vudu is listed under UltraViolet Compatible or under Not Compatible. Examples: http://www.flixster.com/movie/lord-o...ring-extended/ (Not Compatible currently) and http://www.flixster.com/movie/harry-...fblood-prince/ (UltraViolet Compatible currently). If a title is listed as Not Compatible with Vudu then you probably won't be able to download HD/HDX copies via Vudu To Go, and you probably won't be able to stream HD/HDX via vudu.com in your browser. However, if a title is listed as UltraViolet Compatible with Vudu, you probably will be able to download HD/HDX copies via Vudu To Go, and you probably will be able to stream HD/HDX copies via vudu.com in your browser.

Why I believe this to be true:
                    • Harry Potter 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 (Part 1) will download in my choice of SD/HD/HDX in the PC Vudu To Go application.
                    • Harry Potter 1, 3, and 7 (Part 2) show up in Vudu To Go (under My Purchases) in Vudu To Go, but ignore clicks on the Download button.
                    • Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3 will download in my choice of SD/HD/HDX in the PC Vudu To Go application.
                    • All of the above titles (with the exception of Harry Potter 7 Part 2) I paid to convert in HDX through the D2D program on Vudu. Harry Potter Part 2 is the exception because my Blu-ray copy came with a SD UltraViolet copy!!! That was a majorly uncool thing for the movie studio to do.
                    • Harry Potter 2, 4, 5, 6, and 7 (Part 1) are listed as UltraViolet Compatible for Vudu on their corresponding pages on Flixster.
                    • Harry Potter 1, 3, and 7 (Part 2) are listed as Not Compatible for Vudu on their corresponding pages on Flixster.
                    • Spider-Man 1, 2, and 3 are listed as UltraViolet Compatible for Vudu on their corresponding pages on Flixster.

I am assuming the correlation betwen a title on Flixster showing as UltraViolet compatible for Vudu and it's availability for SD/HD/HDX download in Vudu To Go is not a coincidence.

                    Main Point:

If I'm right, then you should always check UltraViolet compatibility (for Vudu) via Flixster before purchasing HD/HDX D2D conversion for your titles (if you want to watch or download them in HD/HDX on your PC anyway).

Tying this back to the main topic:

I believe that the LOTR extended editions are not yet available for HD/HDX streaming or downloading on a PC through vudu.com and/or Vudu To Go for Windows. However, they should play in HD/HDX on a streaming player with the Vudu app. The reason I believe this is that the following Flixster pages list these three titles as Not Compatible for Vudu:

If I am wrong, and you have converted to HDX copies of these three titles via the D2D program AND can download them in HD/HDX via Vudu To Go for Windows, please correct me.

All title status claims in this post are based on my experiences in the USA on the date of this post (2012-01-03).

I don't know where the "Compatible" info on Flixster comes from (not VUDU) but from the bit I looked at it's not very accurate. And the ability to stream or download HDX from VUDU has nothing to do with Flixster or UV.

You can stream LOTR: Fellowship Extended Edition on VUDU in HDX (if you don't own it you can still see this w/ "2 minute preview"). Also, it *is* UV compatible, but I'm not sure the Extended Edition is currently in the Walmart D2D program.

                      http://www.vudu.com/movies/#!overvie...tended-Edition

I didn't try downloading it via VUDU To Go but I see no reason it shouldn't work as well.

                        1. I am certain that you can watch the LOTR extended editions in HD/HDX (on a device with a Vudu Movies app on it).
                        2. I know you can watch LOTR extended editions in HD/HDX because the vudu.com site lists them as having HDX purchasable in the D2D program.
                        3. I did not know if the LOTR extended editions were available for PC HD/HDX downloading and streaming.

There is a much simpler way to check than what I proposed and it doesn't involve Flixster at all:
                        1. Go to vudu.com
                        2. Select Watch Movies
                        3. Select Search
                        4. Enter the title that you wish to check
                        5. From the search results, click on the specific title you wish to check.
                        6. On the resulting movie page (for the selected title) look in the upper-right hand corner and see if there is a purple banner stating "HDX & HD Now available on PC & Mac!"

                        The rest is pretty obvious.

For the 3 LOTR extended editions:

Example of a title with D2D HD/HDX available, but no HD/HDX d/l or streaming on PC:
Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone: available in SD and HDX through the D2D program, but not even listed when searching from http://www.vudu.com/movies/#search/

So, I was wrong. Simple as that. ;-)
