    Windows 8 Apps and UV

So far, there seem to be 2 relevant ones:

    (1) Flixster, though the Windows 8 app lacks UV movie playback (or even a way to view your library);

    (2) Paramount Movies, which shows your whole library, buy only plays Paramount movies within the app. It links you to Vudu.com (or wherever you bought the movie) for films from other studios.

    Anybody find anything else?

Obviously, a Vudu Windows 8 App with HDX support would be ideal.

Thanks. I didn't know about the Paramount Movies app. I don;t think there are any others atm.

Nook Video will most likely have Windows 8 app because of Microsoft partnership. I imagine there will be a Windows 8 UV app that supports CFF files after they launch. Who will make is up in the air. Hopefully Flixster will upgrade their app to add UV in the meantime.

I'm not familiar with how Windows 8 works, but is there Windows Media Player? If so it should support UV. Or the Zune player should.

Re: Windows 8 Apps and UV

I dont think there will be an app considering its still a pc and pc stream via the web and all pcs should have the web. If there is no standalone vudu app for android which has been around a lot longer than windows 8 then you may have some waiting to do.

Now Windows Phone should be a different story. Question, is Surface tablets based on Windows Phone or Windows 8?

The currently available surface tablet runs Windows RT--a version of the OS made for ARM processors, allowing for cheaper, lighter tablets, albeit ones that can't run legacy Windows programs.

Some time in the near future, a surface will be available with full Windows 8.

As for the web browser, the same could be said for Netflix and Hulu, and they both have Windows 8 apps. The availability of big, bright, branded tiles is probably a major selling point of the OS for devs.

In response to an earlier post, Windows Media Player is still there (in desktop mode) and there is a native Video player (in tiled mode), but neither appear to have any UV integration.

Windows 8 is said to have UV integration out of the box.

Windows 8 supports PlayReady DRM out of the box which is what DRM UV CFF files on Windows boxes will use when CFF is released. However, it is unknown whether Windows 8 will support CFF as a file format out of the box or whether you'll need third-party apps to play them.

I'm kind of surprised that there still don't seem to be any UV apps out for Windows RT/8. Has anyone heard of any coming out soon?

A Vudu app is nice if I am just streaming, however for playback of downloaded CFF files it would truly suck if we we're still forced to use a dedicated app. I want native support in Windows Media Center and/or Arcsoft TotalMedia Theater so that it works with my existing HTPC software.

                    Good news, everyone!

The Flixster App for Windows 8 was just updated to include UV movie playback support. Haven't had a chance to fully play around with it, but all of my titles appear to be there, and my first attempt at playback (on a desktop) worked fine.

Good question. Or maybe a bad one, if the lack of Flixster HD is a known issue No choice of quality is available. I've only used flixster on my phone in the past, so I've actually never thought about the available resolutions.

It does support the search charm, which is very nice.

Not sure if it supports playback to a different screen through devices charm, which would be "the future" I thought DLNA was bringing a few years ago

There doesn't appear to be a download option.

                        Vudu to Go looks safe

But it's more UV functionality than I had yesterday.

I can play Vudu movies through Internet Explorer on my Surface RT tablet running Windows 8. Best interface out there.

You have to use it in Desktop mode, remember. It won't work in the "lite" Metro interface version of IE.

The Modern Flixster app is a little buggy. I have to click on My Movies 3 or 4 times to get it to actually go to my movies. It's very frustrating. Usually it just takes me back to the main screen. Is that just me, or does that happen to anyone else.
