ALERT: Ben Hur has a very poor HDX transfer

WOW did I just see a BOMB of a transfer. Peeeeuuueeeewwww!

Ben Hur in HDX has one of the worst HDX transfers that I have ever seen. I actually watched the ENTIRE 223 minute presentation.

For Ben Hur's 50th anniversary, in 2011 Warner Bros. meticulously restored this Hollywood classic so it shocked me to see a transfer that must have been sourced from an old DVD or VHS tape. EEEK! The picture quality is very poor and not even sharp.

Perhaps one of the reasons it looks so weak is the fact that the main body of the movie is ZOOMED to FULL SCREEN. The opening credits are widescreen but when they end it goes full screen.

On blu-ray disc Ben Hur has a super widescreen aspect ratio of 2.76:1. Vudu's HDX file is ZOOMED to fill the entire screen at 1.85:1. So much of Ben Hur's cinematography utilizes the entire width of the original aspect ratio. Most impressive in full widescreen is the infamous chariot scene.

Vudu's ZOOMED HDX file deletes the sweeping vistas that are intended to be seen in Ben Hur.

The soft focus (possibly the result of the extreme ZOOM) diminishes the entire presentation. Many scenes even appear to have a color timing issue that seems to be off, often skewed towards a magenta/pink tint.

Ben Hur should look like this:

The Vudu HDX file looks like this:

Nearly half of the original presentation has been cropped out!

Let's hope Vudu will request a new encode from Warner Bros. utilizing the 50th anniversary restoration as source material. Until that happens, I recommend the blu-ray for optimum viewing and enjoyment of Ben Hur.

I told everyone in the Incorrect Aspect Ratio thread I made! No one listened!

Now you are also stuck with the worst version of Ben-Hur currently available!

WOW!!!! I'm glad I didn't get this, Blu-ray, here I come!!!!! For someone that loves films in OAR, and has a scope setup, seeing this film cropped and zoomed is an injustice....Maybe the non-OAR version is for the tablet/smartphone crowd.......

Yes, I agree. The transfer is awful compared to the immaculate Blu-Ray. Please fix it!

That's HORRIBLE in so many ways... I was going to get that, so many thanks for the heads-up. I'll wait for a version that at least approximates the stunning Blu-ray.

still is terrible. This is one of my favorite movies of all time and to see it cropped down is awful. I only have the SD version I got from a DVD $2 transfer but was going to upgrade to HDX but no way now. I will stick with the Blu.

I wish I had listened, I will now be checking that thread very carefully before doing any more disc-to-digital conversions. I drove out to the store to considerably poor customer service and had this disc converted because Vudu's $3.99 coupon sounded like it would cover this and another Blu-ray, and my computer's drive only accepts DVDs. Unfortunately, the coupon was no applicable there, and I wound up with this this extremely poor transfer which eliminates almost half of the viewable picture. And judging by the age of this thread, it sounds like this issue, like. Let involving aspect ratios (Drive, for instance) are difficult to neogotiate with studios. I will be checking this forums and particularly that thread very carefully in future before doing any more conversions.

FYI, we are trying to contact the studio once again about this movie. Hopefully they can provide a better encode this time.

Thank you so much for working on this, seems like hardly anyone has been listening to our requests for fixes recently.

If you are able to get a better encode on this movie, will it automatically be available to those that converted it in HD and got stuck with the sub par version?? Or will we have to spend more money to get an acceptable version of the film?

I believe the replacement version is what everyone that owns HDX would see.

At least that is what I hope, since I own HDX of this movie....

I'm sorry, but this is pretty much the same story every time. Is it Vudu's position that they are just helpless middlemen with no incoming quality inspection or specification provided to the content provider?

I'm skeptical, since your competitors generally don't have this issue. How does CinemaNow get an HD stream at the correct aspect ratio, but Vudu doesn't?

When the new encode is in place (if it happens) then you will get that...no spending more money. Unfortunately, very few movies have been corrected for this issue. A request can be made, but it is up to the studio to come thru with the new encode. Hoping that all the movies in the Aspect Ration thread get fixed...mostly cause I already own them in HDx.
