Amazon Creating Set Top Box to complete with UV :(

So much for Amazon getting on board with UV This article seems to indicate they intend to be a competitor to iTunes and UV

Bah humbug. Im so tired of one box to do one thing, or two. Thats kinda why i went PS3, it can do most all of it that I want.

Hopefully the PS4 continues to push boundaries.

Yea I hate that also but I have one of the first PS3's and that thing is loud as hell when the fans kick on I like my little ROKU box but sometimes it has troubles with VUDU and doesn't offer Cinemanow or Mgo at present.

I just grabbed a PS3 super slim and played around last night. Amazon and Netflix streamed great, and I downloaded 4 HDX rentals to the HDD last night. Pretty cool so far.

I read the two, but didn't see any mention to UV. It said to compete with AppleTV and Roku, which I can understand. After all, many consumers are moving away from broadcast mediums (Satellite & Cable) to instead go to streaming providers alone. Amazon putting money into offering a set top box gives them an edge over the likes of Netflix and gives them an AppleTV like offering. All this makes sense to me.

I just don't get the UV connection. Maybe I am missing something.

All major studios have gone UV save the rat-hatters. UV still seems slated to be the defacto standard. I do not see how Amazon offering a set-top box factors into this.

Amazon has AIV and like iTunes with their box and system of selling why would they offer UV if they did I think people like cinemanow with their high prices and poor service will be done. Also I have never had a problem streaming from Amazon in HD like I do in VUDU. Seems to me this new box could hurt VUDU as well, but only if they join the UV wagon and not be like Itunes.

I own an AppleTV. I also have Amazon Prime which I stream to my Roku and PS3. The new Amazon set-top box is just an alternative for people who do not have some other way. Also, both of my sons have Kindle Fire tablets. GoogleTV also has a set-top box.

We seem to be missing the boat with each other on this. I have never purchased a movie for playback from the cloud from Apple via my AppleTV, nor Amazon via the Amazon Instant Video App on my Roku & PS3. To me, the idea of purchasing content that is tied to a single technology company is a bad idea.

So, I guess my original question is still unanswered. I fail to see how Amazon releasing a set top box or a new Kindle Fire HD has an effect on UltraViolet. If the idea is that now that Amazon has a set top box soon to be release, they will quickly corner the VoD market place under the Amazon umbrella and not adopt UV, thereby shutting down Ultraviolet as a distro method for digital content from movie studios, I find that statistically near impossible.

I am sure Amazon would like to monopolize the VoD market, but I feel most consumers are like me and would be wary to invest their entertainment purchases into a single technology company. I would estimate instead the effect of their set-top box would be difficult to measure any effect from since it will be so small. It would really only be adopted by a few Amazon customers who want a way to connect a TV that does not have a Roku or game console connected to it. That market segment is pretty small and pretty nitch.

I just do not see any splash from it. GoogleTV was a major one with lots of advertising capital put behind it. How many of your friends have a googleTV set-top box connected to their TV? Personally, I know of no one.

Then I wont buy any movies from the Amazon digital store. I will only buy movies if they are UV.
