Jason Bailey - Flavorwire article
On May 1st, Netflix streaming dropped about 1,800 titles from their streaming library. They have come under sharp critisism for moving from a broad content provider to instead focusing on more high cost new releases.
Mr. Bailey refers to this May 1st event as loosing a "Metric ton of content". There are additional cuts due in about a month to the Netflix Streaming service when the Viacom contract expires.
I do own a Netflix Streaming account and I also own an Amazon Prime membership.
After you setup an Amazon Prime "Watchlist" of free prime titles, this too does not stay static. After a period of time, you find titles that were offered free to prime members, suddenly have a cost associated with the VoD viewing of the title which use to be free to view. This forces Prime members to constantly prune their watch lists.
The other growing major player (while we wait for Red Box Instant to get off the ground) is HBOgo.com. They have a premium list of revolving content. However, it is only available to people who have HBO from a cable or satellite provider. It is not offered as a stand-alone streaming service. At least, not yet.
For movie fans who are presented with SVoD providers selecting revolving content, the frustration is not small. The idea instead of a locker where my personalized entertainment content remains available to me from the click of a remote and my library remains static seems a much better option.
Personally, I do still enjoy the SVoD services and do pony up the MRC to stay connected to them. However, the UV locker is where I plan on investing my time and money principally. It is my personalized title library that is not subject to the whims of SVoD providers removing titles I have an interest in.
