How to get more studios to join UV

What can we do to help convince MGM, Paramount, and other studios to make more of their movies UltraViolet titles and available for disc-to-digital? There is probably nothing that consumers can do, but I wanted to see if VUDU has some insight into how studios determine whether or not to participate and how consumers might be able to influence their decision.

Obviously we could stop buying any movie (DVD or digital) that isn't UV. But what else can we do?

I expect the studios are tracking the success of UV. If we are spending money on UV movies, that means any studio that is not UV is leaving money on the table. So buying movies that have UV sends a message too.

Sure, that is what I am thinking also. Buy UV and do not buy non-UV titles.

I have been guilty of buying a few (very few) digital copies of movies that are not UV. But I think we need to pay attention to that also. Buying a non-UV digital copy doesn't do anything much to support and help the growth of UltraViolet. Plus, you are limited to a single service to watch the movie.

While I don't expect them to reply, I really do hope someone at VUDU will post something to offer some advice for us.

I already posted a thread about this very subject, with e-mail addresses to the independant studios.

Yes, but the bigger studios are not included in that. Most of the movies that are being requested are with MGM, Paramount, Universal, etc.

Sending emails may help a little, but I really think the answer is to buy only UV titles and avoid purchasing non-UV titles. The movie industry, like everyone, makes decisions based on money.

I am jones'ing for Stargate in HDX via D2D. I just don't get why this one has not been chalked up in UV yet.

Since Disney started with Oz The Great and Powerful being their first UV I personally think other studios will now follow pursuit since Disney has started.

Oz is not UV, it just comes with an optional vudu copy. A step in the right direction, sure, but it doesn't provide the other benefits of UV enabled films.

I have to disagree that the most requested films are from studio's like Universal and Paramount, and Sony. I went through the first 500 films for Universal, and only found about 5 that weren't UV. That's as good as Warner, which I didn't even bother to count. Next up was Fox, tied with Paramount for second. Sony was a close third, and Lionsgate was a distant fourth, with about 200 out of 500 not UV, but a good portion of those were direct to video titles like Barney, Bratz, Bob the Builder, and such. I couldn't care less if those ever made it to UV.

So our real focus should be on Lionsgate and MGM. I'm making a list of wanted titles for D2D, so we will soon see which studio lacks the most support, when we get all the studio's added. Please help if you can.

                  Mr. EP,

this is very interesting analysis. Thank you. I will add my titles to your list sometime today to help out.

It seems from your initial analysis that studios with cash to burn have been sinking it into UV'ing (not sure it that is a word) titles from their library. Studios with less cash (Lionsgate as a minor-major and MGM with no funds whatsoever) are moving slower. MGM is at an utter standstill.

It seems from your initial analysis that the conversion of library titles correlates to studios with larger black numbers on their balance sheets.

To me the strategy is quite clear.

The studios are sinking this capital to provide incentive for their customers to utilize the D2D program. Once customers convert their titles and begin to use the new electronic method, they are likely to make future purchases through the same EST vendor where they watch the titles they converted via D2D.

The EST method is in the studios interest since the distribution has inherent efficiencies versus getting packaged media onto shelves for customers to buy.

Customers also get the new features inherent from an iVoD service to enjoy. For me, the path forward is a win-win situation and probably why it is taking off so quickly.

                  On the topic of Disney.

                  LINK:
                  http://disneydvd.disney.go.com/coming-soon.html

Disney will stand to loose no small income stream if they allow their loyal customers to convert their aging DVDs and Bluray Discs into UV for the nominal D2D fee.

If their customers do this in mass, the income Disney is able to draw from re-releases of titles from their library will dry up. I am sure I remember you had mentioned this previously, but I felt it was worthy of repeating.

                  -Walter

Just today, I was going to buy The Change Up at Target along with some other things because it was on sale. It was Blu + DVD + Digital Copy. I thought it meant UV. I looked on the back half way to the register, no UV listed. I walked back and put it back on the shelf and bought the other stuff 'cause most of it did have UV.

Feel free to pass that long to the studios. UV is quickly becoming a choice point for or against buying items. Inclusion (at reasonable price points, of course) may make me choose one item over another, given the limited funds available and the perceived value of UV. So long as UV is well-adopted and thrives, I foresee it being a very good thing. So long as it doesn't get corrupted through collusion (for instance end-vendors deciding to start charging for continued access to UV-streaming services, etc.).

One hopes the latter never happens and the end-vendors continue to offer unlimited non-costly access to UV streaming beyond the "obligatory" timeframe. Hopefully they'll see the "value" in continuing to offer access for free, especially those services, like VUDU, who continue to make $$ off of other purchases from their own systems. Charging an arbitrary "access fee" for UV would be about like shooting themselves in the foot, since A) they might lose a customer & B) if other vendors continue to offer access, then the $$ they lose might go to a competitor. Hopefully those are big enough carrots & sticks to keep things flowing smoothly.

From what I can tell, Redbox Instant will require a subscription. I checked again today, and it still appears to be the case.
