When you think about it, if their movies were UV, they would give away a copy of their movie for Vudu, but with the way UV works, they'd also be giving away copies for Flixster, CinemaNow, MGo, Nook, plus whoever joins the cause in time. That is a lot of money that Disney would be leaving on the table that they could make from people who would buy the movie from each of these individual providers. Disney makes a lot of money by re-releasing old titles, and if they bought into UV, that money-making model would be gone, especially if by joining UV they are expected to jump into the $2-D2D train.

Honestly, once this boosts Vudu's market-share considerably (which it probably will), I think the next likely step is that they will offer their own variation of the D2D program for their titles. I think that they would probably charge $8-$10 per conversion/per service. I don't see Disney downgrading the value of their library to $2 for all digital services, when up to this point they've been getting $20-$25/movie no matter which format or service the movie is purchased on.

My general disapproval of Dinsey's business practices aside, I am really excited for this. I, like many people, like many of Disney's movies, and as long as Vudu continues to be the leader for UV and movie streaming, I would feel comfortable enough to move my Disney collection over to Vudu's service. I'm just not getting my hopes up for Disney UV support or D2D support that would be as inexpensive as the other studios.
Disney will always do things different. I expect UV participation to not change that fact about them. Disney could charge a premium fee for D2D, maybe $5 for BD and $10 for DVD. They could continue to reissue movies every few years via creating newer UV files that you must buy to access.

just think of the death grip that studio holds on the market. Star Wars, Marvel, Pixar, Dreamworks Animation, Disney Studios, Touchstone; That is an amazing amount of dead-weight they have amassed inside the boundaries of their ranch property.

It is almost as if the rest of the industry adopting a standard does not mean anything unless Disney goes along. Also, getting a studio with that much brand clout to see religion requires cutting through a thicket of arrogance of staggering proportions to almost make it a futile effort.

I suspect that you are right. Disney likes to reissue their catalog so they will probably issue a digitalcopyplus code when they reissue a movie.

They might do disc to digital on their own terms using digitalcopyplus.

Anyway this is a good development for VUDU and for those of us that want disney movies in our collection.

I was just asked by my wife what I wanted for Father's day. I requested the Bluray Combo pack of Oz. If no one else has done a digital Copy Plus redemption by Father's day, I will let everyone know if it redeems into HDX on Vudu or SD.

My guess is it will be HDX, but it will be nice to have a public confirmation.

One of the problems with EST is that it does not "gift" well.

Appears the new site is down for the count. I'm assuming Disney wasn't expecting people to access quite yet.

Site now gets redirected to Disney.com

Apparently the insert has the following web site mentioned:

Third article. This one from the Hollywood Reporter and has a confirmation from a Disney Studios source

                      http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/new...al-copy-562021

A Disney spokesman says the move is designed to make it easier to access the film digitally -- and at the same time make consumers more comfortable with the idea of accessing movies digitally.

I noticed the new splash screen on the site as well. If you look at upcoming Disney releases, several catalogue titles are being 're-released with a Digital Copy. The animated Robin Hood, The Muppet Movie and several others. I will update this post later with a couple of links. One can only assume they will be Digital Plus. Here's hoping that at least all of Disney's future releases will keep this trend up.
