Could "Oz The Great And Powerful" Be Disney's First UV Release?

I posted this somewhere else, but I wanted to make a new thread for this instead thinking it may prompt a quicker response from the Mods. I found this link on the UV redemption page. I'm not saying this alone confirms this will be Disney's first UV release, but it at least opens the discussion. I know Disney released Toy Story 3 with a VUDU only copy, so it could be that, but what if it's not? I also thought I'd get help from my fellow members. Let's do some digging on this!

    ...you know? I was thinking...

I got a hit on a disney UV internet search about OZ. It was indicating HD Digital Copy which most of the time means UV. I went to the site and it says HD Digital Copy via iTunes.

    http://disney.go.com/thewizard/

They have to be feeling the pressure of only having iTunes. Some point they will have to cave to market trends. UV just is dominating the digital copy space.

Maybe you found a tea leaf of an upcoming announcement. Otherwise, it is just another disney/walmart->Vudu deal.

I hope you are right though.

I have a whole box of DVDs and Blueray Discs waiting for me to drive them into the WalMart photo counter with that damn DisneyDVD logo on them.

BTW, thx for digging this up. They just have to cave in the next year. Two at most. The sooner the better for them.

...and what is up with this?

      Maybe a CFF container release?

Last I heard from Vudu Tech Support....

      Hello,
Thank you for contacting VUDU customer care. Actually he was not just referring to TV shows. He meant what is aired on TV, meaning tv content or movie content. Also we do not currently offer english subtitles on movies already in english. I hope this information was helpful and have a nice day.

      Best regards,
      Aaron

As I understood it, CFF was going to help this out. Maybe this will be the first Disney UV release and the first to go into UV CFF.

I'm just saying, maybe Disney was waiting for CFF to be baked b4 making the jump and now we are ready for both the last domino and CFF at the same time.

I do not think that OZ will be a UV release. They would make a big deal about it if it was, Disney likes fanfare. I think they would announce their UV support at some industry conference, perhaps CES next year. They would get more press coverage that way! I also want to point out that it is the law that all new releases after a certain date include subtitles, you just have to turn it on in the settings. Most of the newer releases have it now. Clout Atlas, Warm Bodies, The Hobbit are just 3 examples.

ahh. I asked point blank back in January of this year and Vudu said no english sub-titles for english language films. I guess that has changed in the past four months.

Maybe too they are beta testing UV CFF to burn it in a little before it is made standard.

Pretty standard practice for there to be "field trials" for new software deployments (SoP for SDLC deployments).

However, I do agree with you that it is uncharacteristic of Disney to let something like this go w/o the free media splash a press release would bring.

If this was Vudu only digital copy wouldn't we redeem it at http://www.vudu.com/redeemecopy.html?api=vudu like I did for The Terminator and other movies that are not UV yet but gave a code to watch on one Vudu account. I really hope that Disney makes "Oz The Great and Powerful" their first UV movie then a couple months later open their movies up for D2D.

This is EXACTLY what I thought before I even created this thread. It just adds to the speculation that this could be UV. I do agree that Disney loves fanfare and they love press, but take Lionsgate and Hunger Games for example. That was HUGE release, which could have garnered a lot of press, and Lionsgate waited until the last minute to let everyone know it would be UV. Not sure why they waited, but it was very last minute. Who's to say there hasn't been some new developments and Disney has decided to jump in ASAP thinking it will make them more money? If they can make more money now, why wait until CES to do it? The only thing Disney likes more than press is money.

It is true. Money is a principle motivating factor. In the consumer entertainment industry, it is the nimble company that survives. Lethargy does not translate well into profits in this market.

                You make a good point.

Interesting? Of course I hope it is but I tend to believe that it will be a VUDU only code from a Walmart exclusive?

The redemption code is for VUDU digital copy only. It's not the typical UV redemption code and nowhere have I seen that Disney will release this movie, or any other movie, as an UltraViolet title.

Good point. There is no redeem link on Flixster yet.

I see no difference from the typical UV redeem site on vudu and the one for this movie but the fact that there is not one on flixster is telling. BUT the good news is that there will be a VUDU copy with some disc (probably Walmart exclusive copy).

Maybe Disney is testing the waters for an eventual UV luanch. They could be waiting to see how many people activate their vudu digital copy VS iTunes. Maybe if they see a lot of demand on vudu, they will join the UV movement. I know I will be buying this.

Maybe Disney didn't give Flixster UV rights and only Vudu. Only time will tell. I probably won't get this movie but I hope that Disney joins UV for families that want to share kid movies and now that Disney owns the distribution rights to more adult movies.

UV is different from digital copies. This movie will not be UV.

Having a disc with a digital copy available through VUDU is fine, but VUDU digital copy is not UltraViolet. What happens to your digital copy if something happens with VUDU or if their service should be down? You don't have access to your movie. If the movie is UV then you would most likely still have access through another service.

That being said, I doubt anything will happen with VUDU unless they are effected by a major earthquake or something like that (to my knowledge they don't have a backup site).
