I honestly can't think of any new releases in recent memory that had UV rights on Vudu but not Flixster. It is Disney though so you never know. I still don't think this will be UV.

That is because it would go against everything that UV is. So what is UltraViolet? It is a movie industry standard that allows you to securely store your digital movie collection in the cloud. Once you have created and linked your UV and VUDU accounts, you can:

      1. Store your DVDs & Blu-rays in the cloud and watch them on any device compatible with the service you use.
      2. Watch any of your UltraViolet titles from ANY retailer or participating studio for free.

I like how the UltraViolet site puts it..."Total Freedom". Any UV participating company, like VUDU, is suppose to allow you free access to your UV titles.

Unless studios have the discretion to decide or limit redemption paths. UV assures access to your collection from any UV streamer but it doesn't mention anything about universal redemption. Knowing Disney, they will want total control over redemption and could limit potential redeems to DisneyUV.com or select partners like VUDU. Wouldn't that be allowed?

Sorry to burst your bubble but there ARE movies that Vudu has UV rights for but not Flixster as I still have 11 UV movies (4 are Marvel FYI) I can watch in Vudu but not Flixster. Flixster only recently obtained the rights to play UV DreamWorks movies. Cinemanow and M-Go were even worse at obtaining UV rights last I checked. Every UV retailer has to have rights to a movie in your collection or they can't play it. It sucks and goes against the UV mantra and you have reminded everyone but it is a fact right now.

The Vudu corporate offices in Santa Claire do not house the system which provides their service. Geographic redundancy is common practice. That way, if one site goes OOS (out of service) it does not have an affect on the product. This is normally done with DNS records, but can be done through pure IP at the client application level.

IMHO, UV is really nothing more then a database with each user having one table.

Title Name, HD, SD, Vendor Purchased From, Purchase Date.

Each user has their own table in the database and this information is shared among UV content providers. Obviously there is more to it then that, but boil it down and it is just a database. A pretty simple one at that.

Each content provider will connect to this centrized database either via an IP/SEC tunnel over public internet or via a privet P2P connection. We do not know which because this information is reserved to UV members. Regardless, the content providers make database calls to the centerlized UV database to find what UV titles a given user has. If I had to guess, UV content providers need connect via a point-to-point (P2P) connection, as that is a little more secure.

The delta between M-Go, Vudu, and Flixster, CinimaNow, etc., is what they have in their library. Vudu has the most HD and to my estimation, the gold standard of titles available. It is entirely possible that Flixster will not have a title that Vudu does, no matter if it is UV or not. I have several in my library that are UV which Flixster and M-Go do not have yet, but Vudu does. I am sure everyone else is the same in this respect.

I do agree though. For new releases, none come to memory so Flixster not having it listed seems to indicate a Disney/Walmart->Vudu special offer.

However, it is suspicious that the redemption page is the one for Ultraviolet instead of the Walmart Special Offers. Flixster is known to me to be a lethargic origination as far as updating their application. Maybe it is going to be UV, but Flixster just has not gotten around to adding it yet. Alternatively, perhaps Flixster is holding their guns until Disney does a press release.

We will know in about three weeks. Maybe sooner.

Do the movies that you can watch on Vudu even exist on Flixster? I have checked several, and I have not found a single UV title available on Flixster that I own and that I cannot watch. I am thinking that the UV titles that are not available are due to Flixster not having the movie or not having digital rights to the movie and has nothing to do with UV. In addition, if you own the SD copy of a movie, they may only have the HD copy and may not allow you to view the movie.

I have found that titles are missing from Flixster and CinemaNow, and even the UV site. But once they add their digital copies you should have access to them since you have a UV license.

Again, I may be wrong here but this is what I have observed over the past year.

I think he meant if Flixster doesn't have the rights, but Vudu does, it will obviously not show up on Flixster (I have a Sony title that shows up nowhere but Sony and UV because it is the extended version, which no one seems to have). The one that really struggles with the UV/vendor specific content is CinemaNow, even when a title becomes UV they will often not grant a UV license if it was purchased previously.

I see no reason why all vendors should be required to carry all titles, that would eat at the competitive nature of the business. Again, once CFF is released it won't matter who has a film (if they have 1080p content), as I will download everything for which I own a license and have them on a server so I can stream them to myself.

And, I hope this means Disney will be stepping into the UV scene (perhaps the DMR codes or some other proof of purchase will get you access to previously purchased titles, even if for a "small" fee). I don't have numbers, but I feel like they've had good success with their EST offerings...I've even been tempted to buy some on Vudu instead of shelling out $25+ for a Combo pack from which only the Blu-ray will be used.

...I agree. I have not bought packaged media in many moons.

I just do not see any reason to buy a combo pack, get the UV code to add the title to my locker, and then put the packaged media in a box in my garage.

All my outright purchases has been EST in the past 2 years. Add to this my D2D efforts and I just do not find any reason to buy a packaged media anymore.

I have Oz in my Wish-List now. Even if it is released via UV in a combo-pack, I would not buy it. It would be an EST purchase for me via Vudu. The UV feature would just also add this EST purchase into my UV locker. I am out of the business of buying discs just to store in the garage.

I still buy the media when it's cheaper to get UV rights that way. Seems silly that I can get a disc and with all the costs of DVD distribution to the store, and get the UV rights cheaper, but that's how it is sometimes.

yes, I guess I agree. Still, I do not mind paying an occasional two dollars more for the convenience of making my entertainment purchases via pressing my roku remote twice. It is a rare occasion where it does actually cost more and for not having to hunt&compare with in a crowded store and wait for checkout, I am glad to cough up $2.00 on occasion.

Plus, I do not have my collection of "never-to-be-touched-again" discs being added to needlessly.

It is a personal preference decision. For me, I am just done with buying packaged media. I know everyone does not have the same preference in this area. I just simply enjoy building my cloud library of entertainment media and have lost interest in doing anything with physical versions besides getting them converted via D2D.

I sent disney guest services a request asking if it will have an Ultraviolet digital copy. The web site still only says iTunes and Amazon.

I suspect their answer will be 'no'.

If there were to be UltraViolet redemption codes, the media would of had to have been packaged with them and by now they have to be in distribution points ready for getting trucked into stores.

My guess is if the decision had been made to include UV, it would of been announced by now.

I wasn't planning on getting this, because I have been boycotting Disney releases until they start supporting UV, but since the physical copy will include a vudu copy, that is the next best thing I suppose. Maybe if a lot of people activate the vudu copy, that will show demand for non-itunes copies, and that will sway them towards UV. So for that reason, I will be getting this one, just like I did with Wreck it Ralph, because it was early.

Re: Could "Oz The Great And Powerful" Be Disney's First UV Release?

Oz The Great and Powerful will be Disney's first Digital Copy Plus movie. It will offer customers a choice of Vudu, iTunes or Amazon Instant Video.

With the home video release of Oz the Great and Powerful on June 11, 2013, Walt Disney Studios Home Entertainment will be launching a new service, Digital Copy Plus. Taking a cue from the Disney Movies Anywhere initiative, in which consumers will be able to purchase a film and stream it across multiple devices, the Digital Copy Plus replaces the digital copy disc previously offered and transfers it into the cloud, so consumers can choose how and where the digital copy is stored/accessed from.

The way it works is relatively simple: consumers will take the Digital Copy Plus code included in their purchase and enter it into the DigitalCopyPlus.com website. They will then choose a cloud provider: iTunes, Amazon Instant Video or Vudu, each with their own offerings on multi-device playback via download and streaming, including access via Roku devices. This means at launch (and depending on chosen provider), Disney films will be available on televisions, iOS devices, Roku, Android tablets, Kindle Fire, gaming consoles, PCs, Macs and even - ironically enough - BD players that offer access to these providers.

The service is not just limited to Disney releases, however. It will apply to all of Disney?s studios including Pixar, Marvel, Touchstone and even DreamWorks, which Disney currently has a distribution agreement with.

Looks like Vudu is the only provider that does not allow download to iPad. Both iTunes and Amazon support it.

Vudu is the only provider with Blu-ray player support?
