"communication error" is different problem with "read error". The 1st one may relate to network connection/VPN/routing ... The second one is the drive/driver/setup.

I don't know if others have the same type of setup or not. However I had this error to with the latest VUDUToGo. After troubleshooting the issue for a few days I have fixed my system. In my case the computer drive controller was setup in RAID mode. Changing the controller setting to AHCI now allows my system to convert DVDs again. If any other users have the same settings this may fix the issue. However doing this windows will not load without a re-install. I discovered this resolution last night but spent the day verifying I could reproduce the error and correct it with changing that setting. I have been able to verify it for this system. Dell XPS 7100, Windows 8 Pro 64Bit, LG BH08LS20 Blu-ray Writer.

Blurayfan: you are the man! Thank you very much for great deal of time to reproduce and confirm the issue. This is a tough one to triage and fix.

It's possible to switch to AHCI without a re-install. IIRC, it's basically just a couple registry changes you must make prior to changing the mode in BIOS. Had to do this a couple years ago to get my eSATA box working correctly.

            Thanks...
I hope the developer is able to use this info to help resolve the issue.

ISO Mounting software. You mean like Virtualbox? I use it to run other operating systems in a Virtual Machine. Is that what you're talking about?

ISO mounting software is used to load images of CDs, DVDs, and Blu-rays. When the ISO image is loaded windows and other programs see it as being a real disc.

Yeah, I'm aware of what it is. Is it because someone could use VMware to "mount" images of DVDs and fool the software? If that's the case, then that would be a draconian restriction on people who use VMware for legitimate purposes considering it would be a waste of time to go to the trouble to fool software to PAY for something someone would more readily get for free elsewhere.

backup discs and decryption software effectively change the content of the disc, so depending on the identification method used, the disc may be mis-identified.

Except that the discs I'm using are real discs, bought from reputable retailers.

As far as the the VMware goes, I'm using the main OS to use Vudu to go, so there's no reason for the drive to be mislabeled.

All I was saying here is there is a difference between these three situations:

                        a) an original disc in drive
                        b) an original disc in drive with decryption software (ie, AnyDVD)
                        c) mounted ISO file

Only "a" is expected to return a correct result if the disc is found in the database (and correctly paired internally), because in "b" and "c" this is effectively no longer the same disc as "a".

I'm using Windows 7 and I'm having the same problem. Before this last update I had no problems, but of course once they put out a %50 off promotion I can't convert a single disc.

I don't know why they would apply a restriction like that. Other than to be punitive.

VUDU To Go works fine for me, running Windows 7 in VirtualBox with an external blu-ray drive. I would expect VMware to also work.

No idea if VUDU actively tries to prevent these things. But it's really more of a cause/effect in general, so burned discs/ISO/decrypted discs shouldn't be expected to work the same as the original unaltered disc. If they are actively preventing such discs, then this is a good thing IMO.
