    iPad Download Restrictions

Since I can't use the VUDU client on my iPad to download movies (I have IOS 5), i checked out two other UV download clients. I found some of my movies are not available for download. Since I tested it, I decided to share what I learned. These are the movies I could not download:

    Flixster
    Italian Job
    Handcock
    Tomb Raider
    Patriot Games
    Clear and Present Danger
    Sum of All Fears
    Aeon Flux
    ==
    CinemaNow
    Harry Potter and the Prisoner
    Underworld
    Underworld Evolution
    Underworld: Rise of the Lycans

I have a 1st gen iPad running iOS 5.1.1, and I can download with Vudu Player. Are you sure you're using the app published by Vudu, and not the third-party player (that was the only one out there for a while)?

The problem is when I try to play the movies when I'm on the plane. It still prompts for login to the Vudu service. The download works, but I can't watch the movies unless I'm connected.

Since I have the iPad 1, I can't do mirroring, and I've not been happy with the restrictions on playback. I'd like to see my content on the hotel TV when I travel.

Not sure how UltraViolet can restrict us to two services, but not make our purchased movies available. The services doesn't get more money for making them available, so why do they need to license them? If anything, it's costing them money to make download and streaming available.

I'm very sure that if you don't have network connection it will switch to offline mode and will NOT ask you to login at all. You can try to turn "Airplane mode" ON and see. The My Downloads tab will always be available for you offline or online.

For iPad 1 there is a cable to output HDMI so you can connect to your hotel TV via HDMI cable.
Here is the link for Apple store for $49. Of course you can buy a cheaper after market one.

I've tested over a dozen times in different ways, and even opened a ticket. I was told it's not supported on IOS 5.1.1. If you start watching while you are connected, and then turn on airplane mode, it works sometimes. I think there is some timeout.

I do see they are available for less than $40 now, but I'm not sure I want to invest in more 30 pin connectors since Lightning is the new connection.

We may have issue for network detection (or network fluctuation) but if you start out from Airplane mode it should always go to Offline mode and remain there.

Regarding cable I bought one for under $15.

I just tried again, and still no go.
              1) Close all apps
              2) Switch to airplane mode
              3) Reboot
              4) Start Vudu
              5) Logon screen appears.

I then switched on the network and tested:
              A) Logon to VUDU
              B) Switch to Settings
              C) Switch to airplane mode
              D) Switch back to VUDU
              E) Click on popup that Network Connection was lost
              F) Play movie

This is so odd that I have to ask you if you have 2.0 version. In 2.0 version, the login is good for 30 days so there is no way it ask you to login again with or without network. In 2.0 version, you should see the menu at the bottom with 4 items "My Downloads", "My Movies", "My TV", and "more".

I have 5.1.1 and like many others I don't have this issue. I don't think 5.0 would behave different than 5.1.1 that much.

                Thanks,
                LLN

Yes, the menu is at the bottom, as you describe. I'm running IOS 5.1.1 (9B206) which is the most recent version.

Settings > General > Usage > Select VUDU Player shows Version 2.0, App Size 7.6 MB

I can download movies, I just can't watch them when I'm disconnected. Works fine when I'm online. I must have the correct version or downloads didn't exist, right?

                    Re: iPad Download Restrictions

I see the issue now, tsken02, and I can duplicate it. I had logged into the Vudu Player app earlier today to check my D2D titles, and so I did the four-finger swipe upwards to show the open programs, closed the Vudu Player, turned on Airplane Mode, then started the Vudu app again, and it asked me to log in. (Just for giggles, I tried, and it said "No nework. Please check your connection and try again. I figured it couldn't hurt, because I know that Windows will cache your domain credentials if you're not on the LAN, like at work for example.)

Loc, caching credentials doesn't seem to work at all for me if the app is closed, maybe that's the problem?

                      I don't have 5.1.1 iPad 1 w/ me so I can't be certain, but on my iPhone 6.1.2, and iPad 2 5.1.1 - it's not a problem. Probably a bug of 5.1.1 on iPad 1 somewhere.

I will investigate it later when I get into my office as I don't have iPad 1+5.1.1 at home.

I deleted the app and reinstalled, and it seems to be working. I ran the same test I noted above, and it worked just as it should. I wonder if there was some bug that caused it to break? Anyway, I'll watch for a few days and see what happens.

                        Thanks for the suggestion!

Huh, I'll have to try that...after my daughter is done playing games on MY iPad.

I really would like to see this fixed, because I chose a 15-character randomized password after the recent security breach, and it's a bit of a pain to type it in. :\

So far, it's been working fine in offline mode. It's not asked me to signon at startup since I reinstalled. I did splurge and buy the HDMI connector today. It's working fine with the TV at the hotel.

The movies look pretty good, considering they are not HD.
