Apple Introduces Feature to Allow Vudu Playback on Apple TV.

On Monday, Apple introduced a new feature to be included in OS X Maverick that should allow playback of vudu and any streaming service that is able to play via a web browser. Specifically, the feature allows an Apple TV to be used as a second screen for any Mac connected to the same network. You should then be able to playback movies via a web browser on the second screen.

Kinda like Mirroring. I agree with the second commenter that it falls short from a Vudu App.

      https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B7kG...it?usp=sharing

here is what Mirroring looks like. The second screen will most likely cover the whole TV, but still a rather clunky solution to just being able to watch a movie on a TV:

      1) Have a power cord for your laptop near your family TV.
      2) Launch Web Browser (Safari or whatever)
      3) Navigate to streaming provider & start playback
      4) Sit down and watch movie w/o any remote
      5) SD only in most cases

Although it is a nice option to have, it is still a more clunky solution then buying a Roku or using a game console and having to only press a remote button twice to start your 1080p playback.

Also, as a cost comparison, a Roku cost $100. A mac-book plus an AppleTV is way over that, but assuming that is already owned, and the same person does not have a Roku or any game console, it may be an option for some people.

Thx for running this down for us though. It is nice Apple is not going to Block this feature on their AppleTV. They have been known to be obstinate with video playback in the past. Maybe they are starting to get religion.

I have been using full screen mirroring via Mountain Lion (OS X 10.8) since it came out. It's wireless, it's great, perfect A/V sync, looks wonderful... very happy with this feature. Anything I can watch in a web browser I can watch on the big screen. Finally. No more can content creators make silly distinctions between "computer" and "set top box."

And yes, I still have a Roku, too.

You're gonna have to be more specific than that, because I don't believe that to be true, at all.

...sure, I connect an iPhone 4 or an iPad 2 to an AV cable connected to a TV. I playback a movie and I get a message indicating something to the effect "playback on an external device is not permitted with this title".

Concerning the use of a set top box to utilize a ubiquitous flat screen TV as a monitor, I believe this is no small matter.

I believe this will lead to a sea change in the computer industry.

For $100, every family in america can have a computer that never breaks, never gets viruses, and also plays all their entertainment content.

All that is needed is for a keyboard to be paired with the set-top box and for the google office / google drive suite of applications be added to the set top box. Some other productivity apps which are common on computers to be converted to web-apps too. Also some way to send print jobs to a local printer from a web-app.

That sea change will put the likes of Dell, Apple, and Microsoft out of business.

How can you argue with spending $100 for a computer that never breaks and having it all on your family flat screen?

          I think it is inevitable.

          sorry for digressing.

Recently bought Apple Digital AV adapter (lightning) to enjoy my vudu library. Once connected to my iPhone 5, I start playing a movie and got all that dead space on sides. I got pretty frustrated
