EPIC Fail: A story about my D2D experience

It all started out so cool. I grabbed up all my DVDs and Blu-Rays and sat at my computer ready to convert my entire library.

Most of the DVDs worked great, but there were a few that weren't readable. There were a few, also, that weren't licensed by Vudu. In the end, that was only about 6 of my 50 discs. The rest of the DVDs went in great. I chose HDX for all of them, got my 50% discount. Bam - who needs "handbreak" when you've god Vudu?

Decided to watch a movie. Oops. Video is out of sync with voice, there's skipping, and finally I get a message that my network is two slow for HDX. I'll watch in SD. Still get the syncing issues, but no longer skipping.

I tried to upload my Blu-Rays. Only one worked. Very strange. For the rest, the drive light came on, but Vudu never saw them in the drive. That's ok - I've got a Walmart close at hand. I'll just head over there.

I pack up my 20 Blu-Rays and drive over. It took 3 Walmart employees to figure out what I was talking about and get me to the Photo Lab department (I've been in that store a hundred times, and I NEVER saw that lab there - hmm go figure).

So, they take over my discs and start entering them into the system. It takes about 10 or 15 minutes. No worries, and they haven't used the system in ages, so that was pretty fast and easy. Click that little "check out" button and... BOOM - timeout, error, reject, abort, fail. So, they try again... fail. again? fail. Message says to call "Field Support," so they dig up the number and call. The folks at field support tell them to call Vudu support. They hang up, call Vudu, wait on hold.... Sorry, you've called the wrong number, you need to call field support. They hang up, call field support, they're on hold for about 15 minutes when I grab my stuff and head home. Life's too short.

I would have to say that I'm out 20-30 bucks, some time, and I'm a little bit wiser. Sorry Vudu. You're not ready for prime-time.

Give me a call some day, and we'll do lunch and you can tell me about all the wonderful things you've done to fix your stuff and woo me back.

I'd have to disagree that vudu is not ready for prime-time. I'm sure it's a problem with your Wal-Mart. A few of them have had issues with their system, but mine is able to complete the transaction just fine. If there is another one in your area, then try that. If not, well then other retailers also have disc to digital programs which may work better for you.]

Best of luck, but don't give up on UltraViolet just because you had a bad experience.

I have 305 movies converted through Vudu. 75% through d2d no problem. Other 25% done at photo lab in Walmart. I've trained two walmarts how to use their vudu system. Now smooth experience. So easy that once they do it once and know where to find their login info they can usually do it smoothly thereafter. Sounds like your Walmart not up to speed.

I am curious, are you connecting to the internet through a satellite ISP such as Wildblue or Hughsnet?

I have been watching vudu content for about two years on a daily basis. I have yet to have an A/V sync issue. I use a 12Mbps/786Kbps DSL link though.

As for success rates with the disc-to-digital process, I challenge you to try the process with Amazon Instant Video or Apple iTunes. I think you will find with both you will have a 100% failure rate, since neither has the feature.

Vudu is perfectly usable for me and I'm happy with it, too, but I think the fact that we're doing the training of the Walmart personnel and couldn't complete the process at home is the very definition of "not ready for prime time". It most definitely has the headaches of an early adopter platform.

This may be true, but from reports on here there is definitely room for improvement.

More info on this may be helpful to help fix these issue or pinpoint the causes.

Who is your internet provider and at what speed?
What device are you using to stream?
Are you using WiFi or ethernet, and if WiFi what router?
Do other services like Netflix or Amazon, or Hulu stream in HD without problems?
