    Roku in Holiday 2013 Push:

    LINK:
    http://nypost.com/2013/11/17/roku-ta...n-big-ad-push/

    Quote:
"This is going to be the biggest holiday season for streaming; it's going mainstream," said Roku's marketing chief, Matthew Anderson.

With the Roku set top box having Vudu being in the top five most popular apps, the success of Roku can be tied to an increase in Vudu members. After the advent of the Roku 3, there have been user interface upgrades and a big marketing push.

There is a phrase, "A rising tide lifts all boats" and Roku marketing for sales in the 2013 holiday season means a subsequent spike in Vudu users.

I think this will help Vudu, but it will also help other providers that are on the Roku. Especially the provider that is now integrated into the Roku's interface.

Vudu is the only provider I currently use on my Roku.

It's more a boost for UltraViolet. Remember that there is another service integrated into the Roku system now, and it's not Vudu (but I wish it was Vudu because they are MUCH faster when it comes to presenting me with a list of my UV movies).

It is true, the Roku interface has had an update with integration with another provider built in. That same provider is built into the remote for VIZIO televisions with their own button.

I did a comparison of the two. Vudu playback was superior in my estimation looking at the same title being played back in HD. Plus, the other provider has a clumsy method of presenting content. If I want to view just the titles they have for rent, there is no means for doing so.

Anyway, I do think the overall acceptance of streaming as a method of content delivery will provide Vudu a big shot in the arm, since they are the UltraVilolet leading provider.

...and what concerns me is that Roku would pick a far less superior provider to use in this integration. I would have rather seen a new channel created for this other provider and Vudu selected to integrate into their box. Or perhaps allow the consumer to pick which provider that want to use.

I agree that this will help Vudu, because what helps UV also helps Vudu to some degree.

But regarding Roku, what would help Roku is being able to deploy cable channels that contain both live streaming and on demand content. Let viewers select what channels they want to watch and not have us continue to pay for 200 channels of crap through our cable providers. But today most of the Roku channels are also crap.

Vudu is one of five channels we actually watch on Roku.

I agree with your statements between the two providers but....

The Roku is designed as an everyone device, easy to setup, easy to use and very affordable. Your average consumer is going to do and use what is easy, and seeing something right in front of them, part of the "OS", is a lot easier then having to search for a channel....if they even know what channel to look for. I would assume too that the average Roku user would be satisified with the quality, and may not even be able to tell a difference.

I think Vudu should bring back offering a credit to new Roku users or all new Roku purchases. That way a new Roku user would see they have a free "rental" and therefore, they search and install Vudu and create an account. I think Vudu should also inlcude something that discusses Ultraviolet. Either on an insert or as a one time Welcome screen on the app itself. That way people who are not aware of UltraViolet can see that you can use Vudu not only to rent/buy movies but to also redeem your codes and view your UltraViolet Collection.

Roku is a hardware company. True, they may be getting a stipend for selling user interface real estate, but they are in the business of selling hardware. Specifically, they sell a box that will retrofit the vast sea of televisions being used on a daily basis in American homes which do not have the ability to access streaming content. This mass retrofitting will lay an even playing field on which Vudu is the UltraViolet leader.

A WB exec was recently quoted as saying there are billions of discs in homes waiting to be uploaded into the cloud. Once the landscape has these Roku in their homes, where are these legions of folks going to go to do D2D?

I can think of only one place...

Yes, but the WB exec has a site WB owns that does D2D too.... and on many of the UV inserts it says to redeem at such and such website, not Vudu.

Disclaimer - I use Vudu almost daily. Vudu is my sole UV/Rental provider that is not subscription based. (I have a feeling this will become a closed thread...)

In the last few days alone I have seen traffic for UV services spike. Roku was offered for $38 at Wal-Mart on black Friday. The other services (which I won't name) are really trying to compete with vudu by adding features, and the integration of a certain provider into the Roku interface is really quite interesting. It's easy to search by title and watch, buy, or rent it. No need to install an app. Of course I still use vudu almost exclusively, but the others are starting to look attractive. Also, if you buy a Roku at Wal-mart the remote comes with a vudu button built-in, so that will help vudu a lot this season. I think UV will really have strong growth the week after Christmas. Should have some good news at CES next year. I'm thinking no less than 20 million users will be announced.

I don't think the Roku 3 has the dedicated services buttons like the LT, 1 and 2 have. My remote does not and I do not see they have replaced it online. Do you know if the Roku 3 at WalMart has the dedicated buttons? Just curious.

I knew the LT had it, because someone personally told me, but I just assumed that the others would as well. Good to know that the one and 2 have it for sure.

I was going to get a Roku for my parents last week but my Dad wanted a smart blu-ray player instead. I think they were in the minority in not having a Blu-Ray player, but you do have to wonder how dedicated streaming boxes are going to do when televisions, blu-ray players and game consoles are adding more and more streaming options.

But, yes, the big draw for getting a networked player was Vudu. I get that the Roku has a ton of channels, but not many are must-haves for most consumers.

                              Here goes nothing....

NetFlix, Amazon Prime, Hulu+, Plex, and Vudu are really the only ones worth watching. PBS has a new one that has some good content. Weather Underground for a quick forecast before getting dressed.

I know of no others worth watching. For a quick snoozing, there is the congressional video channel. Put any man alive to sleep in the space of three minutes. Max!
