    Noob questions before jumping in

Hey Vudu'ers! Apologies, as I'm sure you get a million posts exactly like this EVERY day, but I hope you don't mind another. I just want to confirm that I understand how the D2D service works before I jump in, drop a couple hundred dollars, and give my DVDs away to a friend. (I want to be done with physical media for good; I already went digital for music, books, and comic books.) So again, I hope you don't mind this thread.

Here's what I've put together as some key features. Please chime in if I'm incorrect on any.

    1. Even if Vudu loses the buy/rent rights for a particular movie, as long as you've already paid for D2D it will remain in your streaming library forever.

    2. Even if Vudu loses the HD rights to a movie and only offers SD, if you already paid for D2D HDX you can still stream in high-def.

    2. If a D2D movie has an Ultraviolet logo, then once you pay for it you can watch it in the future from ANY other service that offers linked accounts with Ultraviolet (just in case something happens to Vudu).

    And one bad point:

    1. You have to choose between EITHER SD or HDX when paying for D2D. So say I pay $5 for HDX, try to stream the movie somewhere, and the Wifi is weak and it buffers... in order to stream the same movie in SD I'd have to scan the DVD again and pay another $2.

    BONUS round:

I put my DVD of "Trance" in my computer and let D2D scan it. It said it didn't recognize it and I had to manually type in "Trance." Then it said Vudu had to manually verify the movie and would contact me(?). Does this happen often?

Thanks so much and sorry for the long post.

Re: Noob questions before jumping in

Just popping in to say I didn't realize the process of having a new post appear in the forum wasn't instant, so while waiting yesterday I decided to just give Vudu a shot. So I've now got 111 movies in my collection, and I bought a Roku 3 tonight. However, if anyone would still like to comment on my previous post, that'd be great.

P.S. The 5 free movies and the $5 HDX booster pack were nice surprises, thanks Vudu.

On the first three you are correct in theory; Vudu's ability to sell or rent a movie should not affect your rights once you own it. But you're incorrect about the "bad point", because if you have access to HDX, you are always allowed access to the HD and SD versions. SD on Vudu is a little like the SD version of a cable channel -- sure, you can get it separately, but if you pay for HD(X), you get access to the lower-res version, too.

But don't hold your breath waiting for an acknowledgement about Trance. It rarely if ever happens.

The other good news is that if you put at least 10 discs in your D2D cart they'll all be half price. Right now the discount is supposed to end Friday at midnight (probably GMT -0800, as Vudu offices are on the West Coast), but a Vudu employee has said that the discount will be extended. Check the bottom of the D2D page for details.

Don't forget that if the in-home version of D2D doesn't recognize your movie, you can always take it to Walmart to convert (assuming the employee knows how to do it and the service is working correctly). This one is not half price though.

Another option you sometimes have with an unrecognized movie on VUDU's D2D service (case in point): I couldn't get my DVD of "Harold & Kumar Escape From Guanatanamo Bay" to recognize in the VUDU D2D app, even though it's UV and it's in the D2D list. I went to the Flixster D2D app, where my UV account is also registered, and that D2D service did recognize it. About 2 minutes later, the movie showed up in my VUDU UV collection.
