    Anybody worried?

After first adopters have filled-in their streaming libraries with title "ownership" through Vudu, UV and the like, how might we expect the principles involved in this industry to monitize going forward? I don't welcome the thought of having to pay a monthly subscription to maintain streaming rights, and think it would be more than dishonest if it happens given the word "own" shows up everywhere. But I can't help but think they will need more cash flow to pay the bills in the future. It is the only thing keeping me from buying more titles.

I don't see this happening. There is growing competition now and apparently they make revenue through rentals and sales. However, I wouldn't mind paying for a membership if that membership gave me access to features that a non-membership didn't. Things like the ability to arrange and organize my collection and full control over what titles my kids can watch.

As the service stands right now, no I wouldn't pay a subscription. It wouldn't be right either because for every titles that I have purchased I bought it under the impression that I would be able to watch it forever for the price that I have already paid.

Plus the cost of steaming vs. the profit from a sale is quite a bit less, you would probably have to watch a movie hundreds of times before VUDU started actually losing money from that sale in bandwidth fees. Granted there is overhead and storage costs, but these are largely fixed and can be build into the sale price. As long as you buy and rent every once in a while you probably won't be a net loser for VUDU.

That being said, I would definitely pay for some sort of VUDU enthusiast package that gave me much more control over my collection. Such as custom movie art, hiding and arranging movies, maybe offer a discount price on rentals... etc. something like that.

Just remember the TOS we agreed to when we signed up for UV. One of the items people were so outraged over was the fine print saying that services like VUDU may someday charge you to access your UV content for streaming, correct? Not saying it will ever happen, but we all signed up for this possibility sometime in the future.

I think the real carrot to dangle here in unlimited downloads of movies you OWN. Not sure that would ever happen, even with a monthly fee. If it did, that could get some people to willingly pay a monthly fee. In a way, this thread is kind of free market research for VUDU and UV if you think about it. I'm not trying to spoil the party here, and I've certainly participated too, but I'm not sure I want any of these streaming service folks (or UV) to know what it would take to get me to pay a monthly fee. Granted this may not be seen by anyone that matters, but you never know.

the fine print also says the number of downloads may be limited.

If the suggestion is Vudu is loosing money in their current operating policies, this is simply not true. Vudu is painting black ink into the Wal-Mart coffers in no small measure.

If they are making money, why would they change a successful model? They are an OTT iVoD & EST retailer. Charging a subscription would put them at a competitive disadvantage and disrupt what has proven to be a successful business model.

I would like to add, I have found the managerial decision making by the staff at Vudu and the technical engineering to be outstanding. I think they all have much to be proud of.

Also, remember that every time a new title is purchased by you there is visa-vie a subscription paid. Just a a gas station knows you will be coming to fuel your vehicle at their station and they will be making no money on the fuel sale, since you will be in their store's vicinity, you are too likely to pop in for a soda and hot dog.

Same principle with the OTT iVoD & EST retailer. They know you will be around to watch your library and are likely to purchase new content from them too.

I'll be honest. I don't think the long-term goal of UV was streaming anyway. It was just the easiest part to get out of the door first. I wouldn't be surprised if the only reason any streaming guarantee is there at all is because they knew the CFF wouldn't be ready for awhile.

I would not be surprised if, after the release of the CFF, movies start coming with not only a code, but also an actual static digital copy on another disc (blu-ray would have both the HD and SD digital copy on a separate blu-ray, and the dvd would only come with another SD copy on another DVD).

Anyway, I'd imagine they would only start charging for streams if they start to lose money because millions of people are only streaming what they own, and never buying anything else.

My Question is this, is this VUDU or NETFLIX. If VUDU starts any Crap, I will be switching over to NEtflix.

By buying new movies, first run, and legacy (as they become available).

I remember freaking about this back in the beginning, but nothing has come of that option in 2+ years now. I remember the UV people talking on a podcast how the access fee was basically a pitch at hotel and cable providers allowing you to access your collection through their networks. Nothing's come of that, AFAIK.

Not saying your concern is misplaced. I just don't share it anymore. Which means if it happens, I'll be angrier than you!
