The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug:

I do know the packaged media versions of this title are not available for purchase yet and are not on store shelves for validation, but does anyone know if they are going to be a UV exclusive digital copy redemption?

I would expect so, since it is a New Line (Warner Bros.) title. The first Hobbit is UV only.

that is my guess too. Just wondering if anyone knows.

With all the flack about the VM Kickstart redemption, I was wondering if there may be some slippage in policy due to the fallout.

UV exclusive would be welcome news for a marquee title like this.

Flixster shows it will be available on iTunes, but only in SD?

That's a Flixster issue; apparently they don't display any "Buy HD" links for iTunes. For comparison, Flixster's page for Frozen has "Buy SD", "Rent SD" & "Rent HD" links for iTunes, but not "Buy HD"; iTunes itself has both titles for purchase in HD as well as SD.

That was a unique situation due to VM's Kickstarter funding; apparently they were promised "digital copy" from the beginning but weren't told which service till WB emailed them Flixster codes, which understandably made the iTunes crowd mad. (Even then WB only reimbursed them for buying iTunes copies; they still didn't get actual iTunes redemption.) That doesn't change WB's standing UV-only policy for redemption codes, which is clearly disclosed on their BD & DVD packaging.

I think you are confusing the issue.

Flixster indicates the title may be purchased from iTunes. There is no doubt about that.

My question is if the packaged media will offer an iTunes digital copy or if the digital copy will be UV exclusive, as we would expect from a WB title.

If WB winks to the pressure stemming from the VM Kickstart backlash and offers an iTunes digital copy along side the UV digital copy, it may set into motion a series of dominos which once they start to fall could be catastrophic for the DECE system.

There really wasn't enough time to change their plans for Desolation of Smaug. I can't see it affecting them in the future either.

I think Warner is All-In for UltraViolet. They operate flixster, after all, which is an iTunes competitor.
