    Re: Disney movies to vudu

Hopefully everybody knows this by now, but just in case this hasn't been made clear - with the newer released movies, you still just need to go to the DigitalCopyPlus web site to redeem your code to have your movies added to your Vudu account. I found this out after I bought Frozen and it didn't show up in my Vudu account. The Disney person that I spoke too told me that if I continue to go to http://www.digitalcopyplus.com/ - that I could still add my movies to my Vudu account. So far so good as I've been able to add several Disney movies since. I first do my Disney Rewards, then I hop out to the DigitalCopyPlus site and add my movies to there too.

I thought some people reported successfully redeeming directly on Vudu without using the Digitalcopyplus website. Disney movies come up on Vudu's redemption page without mention of the digitalcopyplus site.

Either way will work. Strangely, if you go thru the main site menus you pick the option for redeeming UV copies; Disney titles are also listed there even though they're not UV.

But, right now, I really don't care about iTunes. I don't use it. It's also basically proprietary and only works on Apple hardware for the most part. That is to say, "there's NOT an app for that" [on other hardware like Blu & Roku & Smart TVs].

I prefer industry standards and open standards. Which is largely what UV seems to be moving toward. Interoperability: good. Proprietary: bad. I won't be buying much by the way of Disney flicks until they get this through their thick skull. They already support DC & iTunes, why not add UV? It's just one more "Digital Copy" license... If they'd do that, and support D2D, I'd re-buy pretty much every last bit of their animation on Blu-ray Combo-pack in a heartbeat. 'Til then, I'm passing on 'em all. Which sucks. 'Cause I like their animation, but I vote with my $$. I buy UV-enabled stuff because it makes economic and future-proofing sense. Currently, iTunes and old-school digital copy and other proprietary nonsense doesn't to me. I have a finite pool of money, so I only purchase the things that it makes sense to purchase. Right now, Disney doesn't make sense... So, no go 'til then.

They also seem to be sequestering a bunch of stuff from studios they've purchased over the years. Notably newer Marvel flicks (which you can only get on iTunes Digital Copy, but w/o UV license like pretty much all other modern releases). So, older Marvel titles (animation particularly) are all happy and UV compliant. Newer titles, after Disney bought them, seem to be sequestered away from UV. So, Iron Man: Rise of Technovore, I can own UV. The Iron Man and Avengers live action flicks? Not-so-much. Iron Man / Hulk: Heroes United? Seemingly not. Though strangely, Avengers Confidential seems to be? Which is confusing. And that's the point. IT's confusing to have SOME titles be UV and others be seemingly sequestered. Seems to me it should be all or nothing. =o\ And I prefer ALL.
iTunes added an amazing number of account holders last year and is over 800,000,000. Due to this incredible success, Disney Studios feels justified in using them for their digital copy redemtion via keychest.

However, if I am not looking to tote around a mobile copy of my movie on my iPhone (assuming I own an iPhone), but instead want the convenience of having my home entertainment library accessible via a streaming provider for play back on the ubiquitous flat screen, iTunes requires an AppleTV set-top box and their market penetration is very low.

Ultraviolet users as a community are becoming the early adopters for the new method of digitized in-home playback. Eventually, Disney Studios will need to recognize this emerging market or will need to answer to their stock holders.

IMHO, their first UV title will be when Maleficent is released on in-home media later this year.

Although iTunes has a staggering number of account holders, the trend to streaming is making them passe. This is both in video and now music too. In reaction to Pandora and Spotify, they have a new iTunes Radio, but Amazon just made a big splash with Prime Music and there is also Beat too. iTunes has a very small portion of the streaming music market and they stand to soon become an antiquated platform.

At least, that is my view.

That's not the issue with Frozen. Ordinary copies of Frozen (like yours) came with the usual DMR/DC+ code, which can be redeemed thru DC+ with various providers (including Vudu, which will also redeem the code directly) and with DMR for a second digital copy thru DMA/iTunes. However, if you purchased the preorder card of Frozen in Walmart (as I did), the only DC you got of Frozen was from Vudu; the physical copy you got in the mail, with a different UPC, redeemed only with DMR and not with DMA/iTunes. (OTOH, we got Frozen as soon as it was available for purchase on Vudu, some three weeks before the physical copies were released.)

Edit: The only people who can't redeem Frozen with Vudu are those who redeemed it at DC+ with someone other than Vudu -- Amazon, Google Play, or the stand-alone iTunes icon without DMA/DMR redemption (next to Vudu, Amazon, etc., as opposed to the DMA banner above them). If you did not use one of those three options (i.e., you got your iTunes copy solely thru DMA/DMR and did not add an Amazon or Google Play copy), you should still be able to get Frozen at Vudu.
