Mods we need reasons why you are locking threads. Locking this one makes you look bad

I posted this in response to Echopulse's locked thread. This is getting ridiculous. I even PM'ed a mod to see why my thread was locked with no response. My post about the DEG meet up has 1,100 views just today so it is apparently something people would like to discuss as it has everything to do with Ultraviolet and Vudu. We need answers not to be shrugged off like we don't matter. We are the enthusiasts that are pushing the Vudu/Ultraviolet platform and deserve better.

I'm torn...as a long time netizen I have a strong desire to see free, unfettered, yet civil discussions, but as xkcd pointed out recently, no one has an obligation to provide a forum or soapbox to anyone else. This is a corporate-owned and managed site, and they have the right to limit posts here in whatever way they see fit, just as we have the right to start our own independent forum about Vudu elsewhere. (There actually was one, Planet Vudu, but it went away due to lack of interest.) I think the only reason it seems so incongruous is that the Vudu staff are usually pretty open and helpful, so in this case the people who participated in the locked threads probably feel blindsided. This would have been expected on some forums, where professional moderators working for the sponsoring company keep tight rein on the discussions (*cough*Appleforums*cough*).

I guess we need to argue why it's in the company's interest to allow us to talk about things that they'd prefer not to have here if we want anything to change. So far they've ticked off a few members here by locking threads, but even those people are still posting and contributing, so it's not really at the point where it's hurting the forums, so I'm not sure how we can make that case.

If nothing else, though, I agree 100% that knowing what to avoid would save work and grief for everyone involved. Unfortunately, I think this kind of criticism that doesn't suggest concrete improvements for Vudu's products is the kind of thing they see as extraneous and not helpful to their business, so I'm guessing this will be locked, in which case I think we should avoid the approach of publicly shaming them for moderating, no matter how politely you do it, and PM the mods about what to avoid when posting.

From personal experience, it is clear that post which have external links live short lives.

I don't think that I read many of the recently locked threads, but seeing all of them left a negative impression about Vudu and parent company Wal-mart. With all of the issues with D2D, the optics are bad when it appears to customers that the #1 priority is off-topic forum maintenance. It seems like it's been several weeks since the last round of software fixes.

Most forums have an off-topic area where nearly anything goes. Threads are moved instead of locked. Most forums also have a moderator post to a thread when locking it. Something like "Sorry, folks, there's been too many personal attacks in this thread. Please try to stay on-topic and avoid personal attacks in future topics."

Nobody questions their "right"...but they also have a duty to keep their customers satisfied. Actions taken on this forum can effect their business. I would love to have another forum where we can freely and honestly have discussions about UV.

I guess we need to argue why it's in the company's interest to allow us to talk about things that they'd prefer not to have here if we want anything to change.
First, they cannot stop discussions from happening on other social media. Second, here they could participate in the conversations and use this forum as feedback to build a road map and business plan to improve their services and broaden their customer base. Sure, many people are asking for more titles to be added and disc-to-digital television and stuff that Vudu cannot control (but they can lobby on behalf of their customers). But there are many things discussed here that Vudu can do something about if they would understand the complaints and the desires of their customers.

I guess what I am saying is that this forum is a great resource for the the customers, but it should also be a great resource for Walmart and Vudu management to steer the company in the right direction.

So far they've ticked off a few members here by locking threads, but even those people are still posting and contributing, so it's not really at the point where it's hurting the forums, so I'm not sure how we can make that case.
Not entirely true. People have been unfairly banned from this forum. Also, what ticks people off is just having their posts either deleted (that does happen some times also) and having threads locked and that is the end of it. It leaves us scratching our heads and wondering why. The moderator(s) that are doing this should post why they feel the need to do this. Remember that we are a customer and we deserve to know why we are being censored. Plus, that would prevent a lot of future offenses. Right now it simply appears that each moderator (assuming that it's more than one doing this) is simply making up their own rules since most of the time what is being locked does not violate the rules they have posted.

Anyway, this isn't the first time this has been debated and we've asked why they delete/lock in the past and never get a response. I doubt it will do any good unless this discussion reaches someone higher up in the company.

No, I used external links to Amazon for the cheap external Blu-ray player I use for D2D. Maybe certain external links, but not all categorically.

should of clarified. External links to articles seem to not last long.

I have found in google searches articles of interest and posted them here, only to find them getting locked and deleted.

when I post a new thread about the topic, but do not include an external link, it seems to fly.

              Hope this helps.

I'm guessing they closed the heartbleed one because this is the incorrect forum for it. That would be in the help forums. It does seem a lot of stuff gets reported here instead of the tech thread. I tend to forget those other forums exist also because this is the only one I visit. They also seem to close threads that refer to the other d2d services. I'm pretty sure the Forum title used to say Ultraviolet in it. Now it just says Vudu Disc To Digital. If it's not about Vudu D2D I guess they see fit to close it?

To play Devil's Advocate a bit you have to admit some of these threads veer way off topic at times too. That's just life on the internet though.

What is off topic when something is posted in "General Discussion"? Of course this thread is under the Disc-to-Digital section of the forum and is off topic. It should have been under the General Discussion section.

I'm just talking about the threads in the D2D forum. I had thread once and I had to keep asking people to stop bringing up the other d2d services because I didn't want my thread locked. Somebody (don't remember who) basically said "So what, I want to post about it in this thread". I know DanielH has had to get the D2D bugs thread back on topic quite a few times. I think they are really are trying to keep this forum only about Vudu Disc to Digital and that's why the title changed. That could be why they are locking threads, but that's just a guess on my part.

Most successful forums that I visit move off-topic threads rather than lock them. If there's a better forum area for this thread, why not just move it there with a link?

I can't see much reason for locking threads unless they are vulgar, have personal attacks, or post illegal or misleading information. Even then, individual posts could just be deleted unless things have gotten way out of hand.

OK so instead of posting the link to Home Media Magazine I should have just posted the text info from the link and I would have been OK it seems. I am glad madmod20061 pointed out that they dropped Ultraviolet from the forum name as I hadn't noticed, and it was definitely there when I first posted about the DEG meeting. So we now have to post about Ultraviolet in the general forum? Geez I rarely visit there.

Also this thread is about to get super boring as new titles being added to Disc to Digital only seems to happen at a glacial pace. I only have to check in every 6 months now to see that 3 more of my discs are finally available.

I agree, if this is going to be a moderated forum category with Ultraviolet subjects excluded/deleted, there is not going to be much to post about. My D2D exercise is pretty much completed until Disney lets loose.

I think 2014 is going to be a break out year for UltraViolet. I think there will be lots of speculation and real news to discuss, but if we are going to be excluded from doing so on the Vudu forum, I guess we will have to entertain those thoughts alone or find another forum.
