    480p/Enhanced Widescreen (SD) - 720p (HD) - 1080p (HDX)

Could someone with first hand knowledge please explain 480p/Enhanced Widescreen (SD) - 720p (HD) - 1080p (HDX).

I have quite a library of movies in my UV account that I have purchased through both Flixster and VUDU. My favorite movies I purchase in HDX all others I purchase SD simply beacause the cost would be too great. I have almost 500 movies at this time that have been converted through the Disc-to-Digital feature. I have a 52" LCD screen as our primary television at this time. I have noticed a difference within the picture comparison between the SD and HDX movies but nothing that screams out!

Is it wise to purchase in SD? Is it the same as a DVD quality film?? I could not find much of a difference in this comparison.

Thank you for your time in this matter.

I notice a big difference between SD and HDX on my 92" screen. I notice a small difference between HD (720p) and HDX (1080p) but maybe it's not as noticeable on a 52" screen?

I can't say it's wise to purchase in SD, I've gone back and upgraded most of my SD purchases to HD. At almost any viewing distance with a reasonably sized screen, even one on the small side, there should be a noticeable difference in clarity/quality between SD and HD. At some point (around 6ft for a 40inch screen) 1080p resolution begins to exceed the capabilities of the human eye, that is, any farther away than that and you will likely find 720p to look just as good as 1080p. The distance where 720p looks no better than 480p is something like 22ft away for a 40in screen.

480p SD exceeds the tube TV standard of 480i and is analgous with DVD quality, while HDX is basically bluray quality.

Another factor in the argument for HDX is the included sound quality, HDX is touted as having up to 7.1 surround, while much of the SD library is stereo or stereo surround.

+1; my only SD titles on Vudu (or any other UV service) are freebies offered only in SD, as well as a couple of titles not available in HD or HDX.

And if you're buying (especially D2D), there's generally no reason to choose HD over HDX. Vudu normally does charge more to rent HDX than HD, but every sell-through title I've ever seen is the same price for HDX as HD -- probably because HD licenses from other UV services normally import to Vudu as HDX. (That also affects D2D, which is normally either HDX or SD -- almost never HD.)

          .
HDX is not 'basically bluray quality'. It may be blu-ray resolution but that is of course is just one aspect of image quality. You could say HDX may approach blu-ray quality (depending on the title, encode and bitrate) especially on smaller screens but it is never going to be as good, especially on dynamic scenes.

Well, it's as close to Blu-ray quality as streaming can get right now. Once everyone has gigabit broadband, then maybe we can start talking streams with up to 50GB filesize and lossless audio. But by then, 8K streaming may be more important to Vudu...
