need some opinions please..help a newbie out

hi there. rather new to this digital copy code stuff. was just wondering..for those who do the disc-to-digital app...i have many movies some of the in Dvd format.

Of the ones in Dvd I have quite a few that are action flicks..such as "Driven". I have the Dvd for this movie but wanted to know if "upgrading" to HDX when i do the D2D program is WORTH IT??

in other words..is paying the extra $3.00 worth the upgrade ($5 instead of $2)

has anyone made the upgrade on their D2D Dvds??

give me your opinions or experiences..such as picture quality. sound..etc.. please

    thanks in advance

I think it is definitely worth it. If you do 10 at a time, it is only $2.50 each and you get a much better picture quality. With some older movies, the difference is negligible, but newer ones have much crisper picture quality. Watch some of the 2 minute previews in both SD and HDX and see for yourself if the difference is worth the additional $1.50. Besides, if you do SD now, you will still have to pay $2.50-$5.00 in the future if you change your mind and want HDX later. There's no guarantee that the 50% off on 10 or more will continue forever, so I think it is best to take advantage while the deal is there.

Well you're not the only newbie that goes through this. I signed up for the disc to digital about a month ago and converted 23 movies so far. Out of that group I decided only four were HDX worthy. Later I did have second thoughts on a few others I wish I had maxed out so to speak.

Bottom line... Now I'll make sure to have that debate (whether to upgrade) way before I sit down to make the conversion. Oh and yes there is a noticeable difference. Glad I went with HD on my The Right Stuff and glad I simply stuck with the standard version of Astronaut Farmer.

One thing to remember, HDx applies to only video, not audio. With that...

For video I've found that upgrading to HDx is by far the best choice. Especially if you do it at home and you have enough to get the 50% discount (10 or more). Action movies gain a lot from the upgrade if it was a good encode from the studio. Also, how big of a screen are you viewing on? I have a 106" screen and SD looks like garbage on it. HDx is almost as good as Blu-ray. If you have a small screen (laptop, iPad, 26" TV or one that does only 720p) then it may not matter as much.

For audio, that is hit or miss. Some titles that you think should be DD 5.1 or better are encoded in stereo. Prime example is the Matrix series. 5.1 on DVD, Stereo in HDx. Check to see what the more info tab to see what the audio options are. If your tv can do simulated surround, then it might not matter as much, but if you have a decent A/V setup then it probably will.

With that, I've upgraded all DVDs to HDx that had it available. Some older ones are only SD, but I don't watch those, the wife and kids do so I don't care about the looks...

Funny, I thought about saying almost the exact same thing...but then I remembered that HDX is more future-proof. What if the OP currently only watches on a PC, but next month gets a nice bonus or raise and decides to buy themselves a 65" OLED TV? They'd have to pay for HDX all over again.

Of course, if you can only afford to do D2D for a handful of movies, sure, do SD and get more for your money. But unless someone only uses small screens for some reason (maybe a salesperson on 100% travel for work) and feels confident that they won't upgrade, I'd say that HDX is worth the "investment" so that you don't pay for SD now and then pay again for HDX down the road. Even my salesperson example might get a promotion to sales manager at HQ.

Very true Max. I'm the kind of person who would pay the extra for HDx just in case. But I have actually met some people (old people) who have small TVs and won't go bigger because it won't fit the room or the decor. Also, they probably don't do streaming video anyway and still have the old VCR hooked up with the blinking 12:00 on display...

even though i would be listed as one of those "OLD PEOPLE" being 47 years old..i DO have to laugh at that statement LOL

BUT i will say being an "old" person i DO have a 70 inch HD tv with a bose surround sound system... so just cause there's a little snow on the roof doesn't mean the FIRE isn't BLAZING with class in the fireplace. LOL

                j.k

Being 47 doesn't make you (or me) old...just aged a little, like fine wine. Old people to us is 60 and up.

                    Agreed.

Now, when we were all in high school, then you all were old, because it sounds like you were probably seniors when I was a freshman.

in my life i have lived a full "dyslexic" life...not meant to offend..but i was born in '68 and graduated HS in '86!!

i'm probably happier now in older years then i was at a younger age.

It is kind of interesting to see at least middle aged folks have an interest in streaming movies and not just the younger folks.

P.S. This grey haired guy has you beat at 55.

Got you all, turning 63 in March - have over 2400 movies with VUDU and heaven knows how many TV series and seasons. My goal, not to cart all of the physical discs to the "old age" home LOL Then to further cap the criteria here, gender, I am a gal, the original gadget girl I suspect.

Old or the vestige of "old" does not mean that we are not early adopters or averse to new technology, it means that there is an age difference only.
